Best desert destinations in Asia

High-altitude gravel plains and massive shifting dune fields across Asia

Asia's desert environments span an extraordinary range of types and scales, from the vast cold deserts and high-altitude plateaus of the interior and the ancient eroded landscapes of the Middle East to the coastal fog deserts of the Arabian peninsula and the sand sea systems of Central Asia. The continent contains some of the world's most historically significant desert landscapes, with ancient trade routes, caravan cities and nomadic cultures adding depth well beyond the physical environment.

The high-altitude desert plateaus of the interior offer some of the most dramatic and least visited desert landscapes on earth, where elevation combines with aridity to produce environments of extraordinary intensity. Central Asian desert and steppe landscapes reward overland travel and nomadic culture encounters that are unavailable through any other means of exploration.

Heat, altitude and remoteness present serious challenges and guided access with experienced local operators is strongly advisable beyond established tourist circuits. Seasonal timing is critical as summer temperatures reach dangerous levels across most lowland desert zones. Your money goes a long way making extended desert itineraries practical on modest budgets.
