Best Christmas market destinations in South America

Traditional holiday street fairs and craft exhibition rows in South America

One Brazilian town, founded by European immigrants and still proud of that heritage, hosts one of South America's most genuine Christmas markets, complete with traditional stalls and architecture that wouldn't look out of place in Europe. Immigrant communities in neighbouring countries add a smaller version further south.

The destinations on this list range from towns built specifically around European immigrant heritage to newer city events in capitals that have adopted the format more recently. Both run despite the Southern Hemisphere's summer Christmas season.

Visiting in the evening tends to offer the best atmosphere, once the heat of the day has eased and the market's lighting takes over. Local tourism offices typically publish a detailed schedule each year. Dressing comfortably for warm evenings also matters considerably during this Southern Hemisphere season.
