Historic stone homestead structures and colonial era forts in Oceania
Australia and New Zealand have no real castle tradition of their own, and the two sites that come closest earn the label for very different reasons.
Larnach Castle in Dunedin, New Zealand, is often marketed as the country's only castle, with a tower, battlements and a grand ballroom built starting in 1871. In reality it is a Victorian mansion in the Scots Baronial style, built by a wealthy banker and politician for luxury and status rather than defense. Fort Denison in Sydney Harbour makes a stronger case on function, with a stone Martello tower and battlements built in the 1850s specifically to defend the harbor. It works as a real military fortification, even though it counts as a fort rather than a royal or feudal seat.
