Why travel to Hainan?
Hainan is a dream for anyone craving a tropical escape with a Chinese twist. The island’s southern coast is lined with beaches like Yalong Bay and Sanya Bay, perfect for swimming, sunbathing and water sports, while the interior offers lush rainforests and ancient volcanoes. Don’t miss the Guanyin Statue of Hainan-a massive Buddhist monument rising from the sea – or the volcanic geopark near Haikou. Local food is a highlight: try fresh seafood, Hainanese chicken rice and tropical fruits. Compared to other Asian beach destinations, Hainan is less crowded with international tourists, making it feel both exotic and approachable. But there are a few things to keep in mind: summers (May–October) are hot, humid and bring heavy rains and the risk of typhoons, while winters (November–March) are dry, sunny and ideal for beach trips. English is not widely spoken outside major hotels and tourist spots, so a translation app helps. Some beaches can get busy during Chinese holidays and development is rapid – expect a mix of natural beauty and big resorts. Still, if you want a blend of adventure, relaxation and a taste of tropical China, Hainan is a fantastic pick.
