Honduras Airports
Honduras is served by several key airports that form the backbone of its air travel system, connecting the country internally and with the wider world. These airports are positioned in strategic locations, facilitating access to major cities, tourist hotspots and remote areas alike. Given the country's geography spanning coastal regions, islands and mountainous terrain, air travel is an important option for both residents and visitors. Honduras hosts a mix of international and domestic airports, some acting as hubs for major airlines operating regional and long-haul flights, while others specialize in connecting the country’s diverse landscapes. Budget-conscious travelers also have options, as low-cost airlines operate frequently from some of the more prominent airports. Knowing the main hubs, their connections to cities and involved carriers helps in planning travel across this vibrant Central American nation.
Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport (SAP), situated near San Pedro Sula in the Cortés Department, is the busiest and most important airport in Honduras. It serves as the primary international gateway to the country and a hub for domestic and regional connections. The airport is well-equipped and modern, handling flights from major airlines such as American Airlines, United Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Avianca, Copa Airlines and Aeromexico. It connects San Pedro Sula with key cities both within Honduras and across the Americas, including flights to the US, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. This airport is also an economic driver for the northern region and plays an essential role for business and tourism.
Toncontín International Airport (TGU) is located in the capital city, Tegucigalpa and despite its challenging mountainous location, it remains a vital airport for both international and domestic travelers. Toncontín handles regional flights primarily to and from Central America and the US. It is smaller than San Pedro Sula’s airport but crucial for the capital’s accessibility. Plans and efforts continue to develop new infrastructure to ease its operational constraints.
Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (RTB) is located on Roatán Island, a hub for tourism and one of Honduras’s most popular destinations known for its beaches and diving spots. This airport handles international flights mostly from the US and Canada, catering largely to tourists. Airlines such as Southwest, American Airlines and Spirit Airlines operate here, offering budget-friendly options during peak seasons.
Other notable airports include Golosón International Airport (LCE) in La Ceiba, which provides domestic and international flights and several smaller airports such as those in Utila and Puerto Lempira, linking remote areas. Low-cost carriers such as Spirit Airlines frequently operate from Honduras’s main airports, offering economical travel options particularly on international routes.
The evolving airport infrastructure, coupled with a range of airlines from legacy to low-cost, helps ensure accessible, efficient air travel for visitors and locals across Honduras’s diverse geographic landscape.
