Zimbabwe Airports

Zimbabwe, a landlocked country in southern Africa, is served by a network of airports that facilitate both international travel and domestic connectivity. The country’s airports are critical gateways for tourists drawn to natural landmarks such as Victoria Falls and Hwange National Park, as well as business and government travel. The most significant airport is located near the capital city, Harare, acting as the primary hub for international and regional flights. Other key airports are positioned near major cities and tourist destinations to ensure accessible air travel throughout the country. Despite its modest size, Zimbabwe's air transport infrastructure supports a blend of national carriers, regional airlines and budget operators, facilitating connections within Africa and beyond.

Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (HRE), situated about 15 kilometers southeast of Harare, is Zimbabwe's largest and busiest airport. Serving as the base for the national flag carrier, Air Zimbabwe, it offers connections to major cities across Africa, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent, with airlines including Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways, Kenya Airways and South African Airways operating routes here. The airport boasts modern facilities with a renovated terminal complex and expanded runways to accommodate wide-body aircraft. It handles both passenger and cargo flights and is a pivotal gateway for government officials, business travelers and tourists.

Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) is another vital hub, serving as the gateway to Zimbabwe’s world-renowned Victoria Falls and surrounding safari destinations. Located approximately 18 kilometers south of the town of Victoria Falls, this airport has undergone significant upgrades including an extended runway and a new terminal capable of handling wide-body jets. Airlines such as Air Zimbabwe, Ethiopian Airlines, Fastjet and South African Airways provide frequent flights connecting VFA with Johannesburg, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Cape Town and other regional centers.

Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport (BUQ) near Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second-largest city, serves as an important regional airport catering to domestic and international flights. It plays a key role in supporting tourism to nearby Matobo National Park and other heritage sites. Airlines including Airlink and CemAir connect the airport to the broader southern African region. Additionally, Charles Prince Airport serves mainly private, training and charter flights near Harare, while smaller airstrips like Buffalo Range provide access to safari lodges and remote areas.

The presence of budget airlines such as Fastjet Zimbabwe has expanded air travel accessibility, offering more affordable options for domestic and regional travelers. Overall, Zimbabwe’s airports form a critical backbone for tourism, commerce and connectivity that links the nation to the wider African continent and the world.
