Namibia Airports
Namibia, located in the southwestern part of Africa, is served by a network of airports that provide vital connections for both domestic travel and international access. The country’s air transport infrastructure is crucial for connecting its vast, sparsely populated regions as well as supporting its growing tourism sector. Namibia’s main airport hubs are strategically positioned to serve its key urban centers and popular tourist destinations. The most significant airports include Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport near the capital, Windhoek and Windhoek Eros Airport, which primarily handles domestic and regional flights. Other important airports such as Walvis Bay Airport and Lüderitz Airport serve the coast and surrounding areas. Despite its relatively small number of international airports, Namibia maintains connections to major African hubs and select global destinations.
Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) is Namibia’s primary international gateway, located about 45 kilometers east of the capital city, Windhoek. It handles nearly 700,000 passengers annually and is the main base for several airlines including the national carrier, FlyNamibia. The airport offers international flights to regional hubs such as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Addis Ababa, with connections to Europe mainly via South African Airways and Ethiopian Airlines. The modern terminal includes various amenities such as duty-free shops, lounges and restaurants. Despite its international status, many travelers transfer through regional hubs to access Namibia.
Windhoek Eros Airport serves as the domestic and regional aviation hub of the country, located just a few kilometers from Windhoek’s city center. It is one of the busiest airports in southern Africa for domestic flights and charter traffic, serving destinations like Walvis Bay, Ondangwa and Katima Mulilo. The airport supports local aviation companies, private charters and regional carriers, maintaining vital connectivity within Namibia and neighboring countries.
Walvis Bay Airport (WVB), situated near the Atlantic coast, serves the significant port town of Walvis Bay and surrounding tourist areas. It has recently expanded its facilities to better accommodate direct international flights mainly from South Africa and Botswana, supporting both cargo and passenger travel. The airport contributes greatly to Namibia's tourism infrastructure and economic development in the Erongo region.
Lüderitz Airport is a smaller regional airport located in the coastal town of Lüderitz, primarily serving domestic flights and occasional charters. It provides vital access to Namibia’s southern coastal areas known for their natural beauty and wildlife reserves. While it does not handle international flights, Lüderitz contributes to the regional air travel network.
Namibia does not currently have major low-cost airline hubs; however, its key airports maintain regular scheduled flights through full-service and regional airlines. The aviation sector continues to develop to better serve domestic needs and international connectivity, reflecting Namibia’s growing stature as a travel destination in southern Africa.
