Mozambique Airports
Mozambique’s airport network is a vital part of the country’s transportation infrastructure, connecting its coastal cities, inland regions and tourist destinations. The country, located along the southeastern coast of Africa, features a number of primary and secondary airports that facilitate both international and domestic travel. These hubs serve as entry points to Mozambique’s rich cultural heritage, diverse ecosystems and scenic coastlines. Air travel in Mozambique is essential given the country’s size, varied geography and the need for efficient transport to tourism hotspots and economic centers. The main airports are complemented by smaller regional airfields, enhancing connectivity even to remote areas. Understanding the key airports, their locations and airline services operating from them is crucial for convenient travel planning across Mozambique.
Maputo International Airport (MPM), also known as Mavalane International Airport, located in the capital city Maputo, is Mozambique’s largest and busiest airport. Serving as the country’s main international gateway, it handles flights to destinations across Africa, Europe and the Middle East. It acts as the hub for LAM Mozambique Airlines, the national carrier, which operates numerous domestic and regional routes connecting Maputo to important cities such as Beira, Nampula and Pemba. Several international airlines including Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Qatar Airways and TAP Air Portugal operate flights to and from Maputo, ensuring robust global connectivity.
Beira Airport (BEW) is an important international airport located in the central region of Mozambique, serving the city of Beira and its surrounding areas. It provides regional international flights and connects to Maputo as well as other key locations in the country. Beira is a significant port city and the airport supports both passenger and cargo flights, facilitating commerce and tourism in the central region.
Nampula Airport (APL) is a key hub in northern Mozambique, serving the city of Nampula and acting as a gateway to the northern provinces. Nampula connects travelers to Maputo and other Mozambique cities and also receives international flights from some African destinations. It plays a critical role in the development and accessibility of the northern region.
Other notable airports include Pemba Airport (POL) in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, which facilitates tourism and business activities and Vilanculos Airport (VNX), catering to tourists visiting the Bazaruto Archipelago, a popular marine national park. Smaller regional airfields such as those in Inhambane, Lichinga and Quelimane provide additional air links within Mozambique.
Mozambique currently lacks an airport specifically dedicated to budget airlines, but competitive fares are often available on LAM Mozambique Airlines and select international carriers operating on main routes. These airports together form a coherent network that balances international access with domestic coverage, supporting Mozambique’s economic growth, tourism industry and regional connectivity.
