Botswana Airports
Botswana, a landlocked country in southern Africa, is known for its rich wildlife and stunning natural landscapes, including the famous Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park. The country’s airports are essential for supporting tourism, domestic transportation and international travel, connecting Botswana with key African cities and global gateways. Despite its modest population, Botswana’s airport network consists of several major airports strategically positioned to serve the capital, tourist hotspots and regional towns. The primary international entry point is located near the capital city, Gaborone, while other significant airports support tourism, especially for safari-goers and visitors exploring Botswana's vast wilderness areas.
Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (GBE), located about 15 kilometers north of Gaborone, serves as Botswana’s main international gateway. Named after the country’s first president, the airport handles the highest volume of passenger traffic nationally. It is a hub for the flag carrier, Air Botswana and hosts regional airlines such as South African Airways, Ethiopian Airlines and Airlink. Flights connect Botswana to major cities like Johannesburg, Cape Town, Addis Ababa and Windhoek. The airport features modern facilities, including a special economic zone housing aviation-related businesses and diamond sector offices. It functions as a crucial hub for both passenger and cargo flights, facilitating government, business and leisure travel.
Maun Airport (MUB) is Botswana’s second busiest airport and serves as the gateway to the Okavango Delta, one of Africa’s premier wildlife and safari destinations. Located close to the town of Maun, it supports a high volume of charter flights and small aircraft movements, especially during peak tourism seasons. The airport connects visitors to various remote safari lodges with frequent short air transfers, making it vital for nature tourism. Maun also offers scheduled flights to domestic and South African cities, including Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Kasane International Airport (BBK), situated near Kasane town in the north, is a key entry point for visitors heading to Chobe National Park and the riverfront area bordering Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Upgraded recently with a new terminal, Kasane offers scheduled flights connecting to Gaborone and regional hubs through Air Botswana and other regional carriers. It is a critical airport for wildlife tourists traveling to Northern Botswana's renowned parks.
Francistown International Airport (FRW), another important airport, serves the mining and commercial activities in the northeastern part of Botswana. Although smaller than Gaborone and Maun, it provides regional connectivity with scheduled flights to Gaborone and Johannesburg.
Botswana’s aviation landscape also includes several smaller airstrips and airfields primarily supporting charter and safari flights, underscoring the country’s reliance on air travel to access its vast, remote wilderness areas. With airlines like Air Botswana and regional operators expanding routes, Botswana balances efficient connectivity for both local residents and a growing map of international visitors. Low-budget options have been limited but regional competition helps maintain affordable access, particularly on flights connecting major African cities.
