Angola Airports

Angola's air transport system is anchored by its main international gateway, Quatro de Fevereiro Airport, located in the capital city of Luanda on the Atlantic coast. This airport has historically handled the majority of Angola's international and domestic flights and serves as the hub for TAAG Angola Airlines, the national carrier. It connects Angola to key African, European and South American destinations, serving as a crucial node for trade, tourism and business. In recent years, Angola has made major investments in its airport infrastructure, including the construction of the new Dr. Antonio Agostinho Neto International Airport located about 40 kilometers south-east of Luanda, which is set to become the primary hub. The country also relies on a network of regional airports spread across its vast territory to facilitate domestic connectivity to provincial capitals and remote areas.

Quatro de Fevereiro Airport has long been Angola's busiest facility, with two asphalt runways capable of handling large aircraft. It operates both international and domestic flights, connecting Luanda with cities including Lisbon, Johannesburg, Sao Paulo and Dubai. The airport features passenger terminals with modern amenities and is critical for Angola’s export industries, including oil and diamonds. However, this airport is gradually being superseded by the new Dr. Antonio Agostinho Neto International Airport that can accommodate up to 15 million passengers annually and is designed for expansion with longer runways suitable for wide-body aircraft.

The new Dr. Antonio Agostinho Neto International Airport, located in the Icolo e Bengo municipality, is envisaged as a regional hub boosting both passenger and freight capacity. TAAG Angola Airlines has fully transferred operations here as of late 2025, modernizing its fleet with aircraft like Boeing 787s and Airbus A220s. This airport enhances Angola’s connectivity to the rest of Africa, Europe and Asia, aiming to increase tourism and business opportunities.

In addition to Luanda's international airports, Angola operates several regional airports that maintain domestic air routes crucial for connecting the country’s provinces. These include Cabinda Airport in the exclave province, Catumbela Airport near Benguela city, Lubango Airport in southern Angola and Huambo’s Albano Machado Airport. These airports provide vital access to provincial capitals and are vital in a country where overland travel can be lengthy and challenging due to road conditions and distances.

Domestic flights operate primarily by TAAG Angola Airlines and its subsidiary Son Air, which service routes between Luanda and cities such as Cabinda, Huambo, Lubango, Menongue, Soyo and others. While Angola does not have a prominent low-cost airline market, the national carrier ensures essential air connectivity. The scheduled domestic flights help bridge vast distances, fostering economic development and regional integration in a resource-rich but geographically dispersed country.
