Best zoo destinations in Asia

Rare wildlife conservation grounds and giant panda sanctuaries across Asia

Asia's zoological institutions range from the world-leading conservation facilities and research centres of the more developed countries to basic collections where welfare standards fall considerably short of international best practice. The gap between the best and worst is wider here than in most other regions, making advance research into accreditation and welfare records more important than elsewhere before choosing which institutions to visit and support with admission fees.

The continent's leading zoos have developed serious breeding programmes for regionally significant species, with giant pandas, tigers, orangutans and other iconic Asian wildlife the focus of conservation work of genuine international importance. Several institutions have moved well beyond traditional zoo formats into immersive habitat environments and wildlife sanctuary models that prioritise animal welfare and conservation education alongside the visitor experience.

Accreditation by recognised international bodies is the most reliable indicator of welfare and conservation standards and checking membership before visiting is worthwhile. The most popular institutions require advance booking during school holiday periods and national holidays when capacity fills quickly. Your money goes a long way across most of the continent making multiple institution visits practical even on modest budgets, though premium experiences at the leading facilities are priced accordingly.
