Urban mural districts and public graffiti walls in North America

North America's street art scenes are among the most influential in the world, with the continent's graffiti and mural traditions having shaped the global development of the form from its origins in the urban centres of the east coast through to the large-scale public art programmes that have transformed neighbourhoods across the continent. Several cities have developed internationally recognised mural districts and outdoor gallery programmes that draw visitors specifically for the quality and density of the work.

The continent's most developed scenes sit at the intersection of community mural traditions, commercial public art programmes and active unsanctioned cultures that produce distinct types of work within the same urban environment. Former industrial neighbourhoods and areas of economic transition consistently produce the most concentrated street art environments, with annual festivals and artist residency programmes bringing significant international talent alongside local artists.

Street art is inherently impermanent and current local knowledge is more reliable than published guides for locating significant work. Early morning visits deliver better photographic conditions and fewer crowds at the most celebrated pieces. Several cities offer specialist walking tours that provide historical and cultural context alongside access to work that independent visitors frequently miss.
