Dominican Republic Airports

The Dominican Republic, a vibrant Caribbean nation known for its stunning beaches and rich culture, is served by a well-developed network of airports that facilitate seamless connections within the country and to global destinations. The country's main airport hubs are strategically located to support its tourism-driven economy and growing travel demands. The busiest and most prominent airports include Punta Cana International Airport, Las Américas International Airport near the capital Santo Domingo and Puerto Plata International Airport. These airports connect passengers to North America, Europe and other parts of the Caribbean, offering a mix of full-service and low-cost carrier options. Additionally, domestic flights connect smaller cities, enhancing internal mobility across the island.

Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), located in the eastern province of La Altagracia, is the Dominican Republic’s busiest airport and a major hub for international tourism. It features two terminals and handles over 7 million passengers annually, with direct flights from major carriers such as American Airlines, Delta, British Airways and low-cost airlines including Viva Air and Arajet. The airport serves as the gateway to popular resorts in Punta Cana and nearby Bavaro, offering efficient connections to cities throughout the Americas and Europe.

Las Américas International Airport (SDQ), situated approximately 20 kilometers east of the capital, Santo Domingo, serves as the country’s second busiest airport. It focuses primarily on international flights, with airlines like Aeroméxico, Delta, JetBlue and American Airlines offering frequent routes, mainly to the United States and Latin America. Despite limited public transport connections to the city, taxis and private transfers are widely available. The airport supports both business and leisure travelers heading to the urban and historic areas of Santo Domingo.

Puerto Plata International Airport (POP), also known as Gregorio Luperón International Airport, is located in the northern coastal region and serves the city of Puerto Plata along with beach resorts such as Playa Dorada. This airport handles fewer passengers than Punta Cana and Santo Domingo but is important for tourists visiting the northern coast. Airlines operating here include Air Canada Rouge, JetBlue, American Airlines and low-cost carriers such as Arajet. The airport is conveniently connected to surrounding resorts by car or shuttle services.

Additional airports include La Romana International Airport and Samaná El Catey International Airport, both catering to niche tourism markets with international connections to Europe, the Caribbean and North America. Several smaller airports like La Isabela International Airport in Santo Domingo primarily support domestic flights and regional carriers like Aeronaves Dominicanas and Air Century.

The Dominican Republic is also home to Arajet, an ultra-low-cost carrier based at Las Américas International Airport, introducing more affordable travel options domestically and internationally. This airline alongside Viva Air has expanded access to multiple destinations, fostering competitive pricing and increasing traveler choices across the Caribbean and the Americas.
