Netherlands Airports

The Netherlands is a country well-known for its rich cultural heritage, vibrant cities and iconic landscapes of tulips and windmills. Its air travel infrastructure is centered around a few key airports that serve as the main gateways for millions of passengers each year. The country’s airports are strategically located to provide easy access to major urban centers and tourist destinations, ensuring efficient connectivity nationally and internationally. Among these, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the flagship airport, recognized as one of Europe’s busiest hubs. Alongside Schiphol, several regional airports cater to domestic and international flights, including budget and leisure carriers, making air travel accessible and flexible to a wide range of travelers.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (IATA: AMS) is the primary international airport in the Netherlands, located approximately 9 km southwest of Amsterdam city center. Schiphol is the country’s largest airport and the third busiest in Europe, serving over 70 million passengers annually. It is the main hub for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and a significant base for Transavia, Martinair and various international carriers. Schiphol offers an extensive network of flights to more than 300 destinations worldwide, supported by five runways and comprehensive passenger facilities including shopping, dining and lounges. The airport is conveniently connected to Amsterdam and other Dutch cities by train, bus and road.

Eindhoven Airport (IATA: EIN), located 8 km west of Eindhoven, is the second largest airport in the country. It mainly caters to low-cost and leisure airlines such as Ryanair, serving popular European holiday destinations. Eindhoven provides a growing number of routes and serves as an affordable alternative to Schiphol, particularly for travelers in the southern regions of the Netherlands.

Rotterdam The Hague Airport (IATA: RTM) is situated around 5 km north of Rotterdam and serves both Rotterdam and The Hague areas. This airport focuses on European and regional flights with carriers like Corendon and Transavia, facilitating convenient access to the western Netherlands.

Maastricht Aachen Airport (IATA: MST) lies close to the Belgian and German borders in the south. Besides regular passenger flights, Maastricht is a major cargo hub and features seasonal charter services to holiday destinations, catering to the Limburg province and surrounding areas.

Groningen Airport Eelde (IATA: GRQ) in the north provides regional connectivity with flights to European cities, serving as a vital link for the northern provinces. It supports carriers such as KLM Cityhopper and Corendon Airlines.

The Netherlands is notable for balancing major international hubs with regional airports that accommodate budget airlines and leisure travel. Many low-cost carriers, including easyJet and Vueling, operate from Schiphol, while Eindhoven and Rotterdam accommodate a growing share of budget travel demand. The country also plans to expand Lelystad Airport to support increased leisure flights. With its highly efficient transport infrastructure, all airports in the Netherlands are well connected to their surrounding cities via road and rail, making travel seamless for locals and tourists alike.
