Azerbaijan Airports
Azerbaijan, located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, features a growing network of airports that link its capital, key cities and surrounding regions to the world. The country's strategic geographic position makes its airports critical for fostering tourism, trade and business connectivity. Azerbaijan’s airports provide access not only to the vibrant capital city of Baku but also to various regional centres and cultural sites, supporting a diverse array of travel needs. With a mixture of modern infrastructure, national carriers and emerging budget airline options, Azerbaijan is steadily enhancing its air transport sector to provide efficient and convenient services.
The principal airport of Azerbaijan is Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD), situated about 20 kilometres northeast of Baku city centre. This airport is the busiest in Azerbaijan and the South Caucasus region, serving as the main hub for Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL), as well as cargo airline Silk Way West Airlines. The facility features two main terminals – international and domestic – and a VIP terminal, equipped with modern passenger amenities such as lounges, duty-free shops, restaurants and free Wi-Fi. Heydar Aliyev International Airport offers direct flights to numerous global destinations including Istanbul, Moscow, Dubai, Frankfurt and London. It is well connected to Baku via the Baku Airport Highway and has reliable ground transportation options including taxis, shuttle buses and car hire.
Azerbaijan Airlines dominates domestic and international routes, while low-cost carriers such as Wizz Air and Pegasus Airlines provide budget-friendly options for travellers flying within the region and to parts of Europe. This blend of carriers expands accessibility for tourists and business passengers alike.
In western Azerbaijan, Ganja International Airport (GNJ) serves the country’s second-largest city, Ganja. Located 10 kilometres from the city centre, this airport handles both domestic and international flights and acts as a regional hub connecting western Azerbaijan with Turkey, Russia and other key locations. The airport includes one passenger terminal with facilities such as basic food outlets, currency exchange and passenger services.
Other important airports include Nakhchivan International Airport (NAJ), which serves the Nakhchivan exclave and provides vital air links to the rest of Azerbaijan; Gabala International Airport (GBB) in the northern region, known for its scenic surroundings; and Lankaran International Airport (LLK) in the south, offering growing domestic and seasonal international flights. Azerbaijan's regional airports enhance connectivity beyond the capital, supporting domestic tourism and regional development.
Recent investments in airport infrastructure focus on expanding capacity and improving passenger experience, positioning Azerbaijan's airports as modern, efficient transportation hubs. Airlines continue to expand routes, while enhanced facilities and convenient services make travelling to and within Azerbaijan more seamless than ever.
