Ghana Airports

Ghana's aviation landscape is anchored by Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra, the capital city. KIA serves as the country’s primary international and domestic gateway, linking Ghana to major global destinations including New York, London, Dubai and several African cities. Managed by Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), the airport has undergone significant modernization, including the opening of a state-of-the-art Terminal 3 that can handle up to 5 million passengers annually. Its strategic coastal location enhances Ghana’s role as a key air hub in West Africa. In addition to international connectivity, KIA supports numerous domestic flights, providing efficient access to regional cities and fostering business and tourism growth throughout the country.

Kotoka International Airport is Ghana’s largest and busiest airport, serving as the hub for domestic airlines such as Africa World Airlines and Passion Air. The airport has two main terminals: Terminal 2 caters to domestic flights, while Terminal 3 handles regional, international and long-haul services. KIA boasts modern amenities including business lounges, automated baggage handling, extensive retail spaces and duty-free shopping. Its recent expansion positions it as a competitive aviation center in West Africa.

Besides KIA, Ghana operates several important domestic airports that connect Accra to major cities across the country. Kumasi Airport is a major domestic and regional hub in the Ashanti Region, facilitating travel to central Ghana. Tamale Airport in northern Ghana serves as an important gateway for the northern territories, supporting domestic and military operations. Other notable airports include Takoradi Airport, crucial for the Western Region’s oil industry and Sunyani Airport, serving the Bono Region.

The domestic air network is mainly served by local carriers Africa World Airlines and Passion Air, which ensure connectivity for business and leisure travelers across Ghana’s regions. Low-cost carriers have less presence here, but the affordability of domestic flights helps maintain robust travel options. Cargo operations are also integral, with Kotoka International Airport featuring a modern cargo center playing a vital role in facilitating Ghana’s trade and logistics.

Ghana’s ongoing investments in airport infrastructure and expansion projects highlight its ambitions to become a leading aviation hub in Africa. Airport City Accra, a development around KIA, integrates retail, hospitality and corporate offices, further underpinning the region’s growth as a center of commerce and travel.
