Gabon Airports
Gabon, located on the west coast of Central Africa, is served by a network of airports that are critical to both international and domestic connectivity. The air transport infrastructure here is vital due to Gabon's dense forests and rivers, which can make overland travel challenging in some regions. Most travelers entering Gabon arrive through its principal gateway, the capital city Libreville, but several regional airports help connect more remote areas to major cities and neighboring countries. The nation’s aviation sector has been modernizing, supporting both tourism and a robust natural resources economy, with new projects such as airport upgrades underway. The most prominent airports not only facilitate air traffic but also offer essential links for business, travel and cargo, playing a pivotal role in Gabon's ongoing development.
The largest and busiest airport is Léon M'Ba International Airport (LBV) in Libreville, the country’s main international hub situated on the Atlantic coast. This airport handles most international flights and serves as a connector for cities across Africa, Europe and the Middle East. It hosts major carriers such as Air France, Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, RwandAir and regional operator Afrijet, with links to Paris, Istanbul, Addis Ababa, Johannesburg, Douala and several Central African capitals. The airport offers car rental, VIP lounges, duty-free shopping and easy taxi access to Libreville’s city center, as public transport is otherwise limited.
The second most important facility is Port-Gentil International Airport (POG), serving the coastal city of Port-Gentil, Gabon’s oil and gas industry hub. This airport primarily manages flights to Libreville and some select international destinations, frequently accommodating business travelers, oil sector workers and air cargo. Airlines like Afrijet and Air Côte d’Ivoire have frequent services here, enabling reliable access between Gabon's two main economic centers and select foreign cities. Another vital hub is M'Vengue El Hadj Omar Bongo Ondimba International Airport (MVB) in Franceville, which services the mining-rich southeast and supports economic and corporate traffic. This airport mainly operates regional and domestic flights, linking Franceville to Libreville and other towns through airlines such as Afrijet. While its focus is more domestic, it plays a strategic logistics role in supporting regional resource-based industries.
Other notable regional airports include Koulamoutou Airport (KOU), which provides key connections for Central Gabon, Oyem Airport (OYE) in the north and Mouila Airport (MJL), serving the southwest. These airports support mainly small to medium-sized aircraft and facilitate travel to regions that are often otherwise hard to reach, especially during the rainy season when roads become impassable. Facilities at these airports are basic and focus on functionality, providing essential services to surrounding cities and towns. Gabon is also planning further airport upgrades, including a new international facility (the Andem Airport project) to modernize capacity and improve tourism infrastructure.
Low-cost carriers are generally less prominent in Gabon than in some other parts of Africa, but regional airline networks provide connections at competitive prices. Domestic service is mainly supplied by Afrijet and Nationale Regionale Transport, with international links offered by African and international airlines, rather than classic budget providers. Overall, Gabon’s main airports are reliable gateways for international arrivals and vital points of connection for remote and resource-rich communities, underpinning both the economy and the country's unique travel landscape.
