Algeria Airports

Algeria, the largest country in Africa by land area, has a well-established network of airports that serve its vast and diverse regions. The country's airports are critical for connecting its major cities, remote desert towns and coastal hubs, supporting both passenger and cargo transportation. Algeria's prominent airport hubs are strategically located in the north, near the Mediterranean coast, where the majority of the population resides. The main airports include Houari Boumediene Airport in Algiers, Oran Es Senia Airport in Oran and Mohamed Boudiaf International Airport in Constantine. These airports handle international and domestic flights, serving as vital entry points to Algeria for business, tourism and expatriate communities. Algeria also features regional airports that support smaller cities and the energy sector, broadening accessibility across the country.

Houari Boumediene Airport (ALG), located 16 kilometers east of Algiers, is Algeria’s largest and busiest airport, acting as the primary international gateway. It hosts over 26 airlines, including the national carrier Air Algérie and Tassili Airlines, which operate the majority of domestic and regional flights. Major international airlines such as Air France, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways and Emirates connect Algiers with Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The airport consists of three terminals dedicated to international, domestic and charter flights, equipped with modern facilities designed to handle nearly 10 million passengers annually.

Oran Es Senia Airport (ORN), also known as Ahmed Ben Bella Airport, serves the western city of Oran and is the second busiest airport in the country. Located 12 kilometers south of Oran, it offers frequent flights to French cities including Paris and Marseille, along with routes to Spain and Turkey. It is an important hub for Algerian expatriates in Europe, supporting domestic and international routes operated by Air Algérie and other carriers.

Mohamed Boudiaf International Airport (CZL) is situated in Constantine and serves as a major hub for eastern Algeria. It handles domestic flights and international services primarily to France. The airport features modernized terminals and lounges, providing facilities designed to accommodate increasing passenger traffic.

Other significant airports include Bejaia Airport, which caters to the Kabylie region near the Mediterranean, offering both domestic and limited international routes mostly to France. Chlef International Airport supports regional connectivity with few scheduled flights, linking nearby cities like Algiers and Oran. Ouargla Airport is vital for transporting personnel in Algeria’s oil and gas sector, supporting frequent charter and domestic flights connected to major cities and energy hubs.

While Algeria does not have a dominant low-cost airline sector, regional airlines such as Transavia France have increased connectivity with Europe and state-owned carriers focus on maintaining robust domestic networks. The country continues to invest in airport modernization and infrastructure expansion to improve passenger experience and handle growing international and domestic travel demands.
