Best natural wonder destinations in Asia

Dramatic mountain ranges and unique physical landmarks in Asia

Asia contains some of the most extraordinary natural wonders on earth, shaped by the collision of tectonic plates, vast river systems, volcanic activity and climatic extremes that exist nowhere else at the same scale. The continent's sheer size means that the range of natural phenomena on offer is genuinely unmatched, from the highest mountain range on earth to active volcanic archipelagos and cave systems of staggering scale.

Many of Asia's most remarkable natural sites exist within living ecosystems of great complexity. Ancient karst landscapes, vast river deltas, tropical rainforest formations and high altitude lakes and plateaus are as much about the life they support as the geology that formed them. The combination of dramatic scenery and extraordinary biodiversity makes many sites worth visiting on multiple levels.

Accessibility varies enormously across the region. Some of Asia's great natural wonders are well developed for visitors with good infrastructure and manageable crowds. Others require serious planning, physical preparation and a tolerance for logistical complexity. Seasonal conditions can make certain sites unreachable at specific times of year and checking access conditions before planning a visit is essential.

Vine bridges, deep gorges and mountain hot springs
Vine bridges cross the Iya Valley's gorges, woven from mountain vine using a centuries-old technique. Villagers once used the bridges' fragile design to cut them down and block invaders. National Park in Japan
Shiretoko National Park
Brown bears and drift ice in Hokkaido
Drift ice piles along Shiretoko's coastline each winter, drawing visitors to walk across the frozen sea. Brown bears roam the peninsula's forest in one of Japan's highest concentrations. Town in Japan
Yufuin Onsen
Lakeside onsen town below Mount Yufu
Mount Yufu rises above Yufuin, its slopes framing the hot spring town below. Lake Kinrin steams where warm spring water mixes with the cooler lake surface. Foot baths line the town's main street, free for visitors to use. Traditional ryokan inns draw bath water directly from the springs beneath the valley.
Island in Japan
Yakushima
Ancient cedars, mossy forest and waterfalls
Ancient cedar trees, some over a thousand years old, grow deep in Yakushima's mountain forest. Moss covers the forest floor and fallen logs, thick from near-constant rainfall. Jomon Sugi, the oldest known cedar here, may predate recorded Japanese history. Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke drew visual inspiration from these misty woods.
