Clear river valley beneath the Hotaka Range

Kamikochi is a mountain valley at about 4,900 ft in Nagano Prefecture, set within Chubu Sangaku National Park. The Azusa River flows through marshes, riverside forest and clear ponds with peaks above 10,000 ft on every side. Kappa Bridge and Taisho Pond are the best known sights. Hiking trails start from the valley floor toward the Hotaka range and Mt. Yari for experienced climbers. Private cars aren't allowed so everyone arrives by bus in a season that runs from mid-April to mid-November. From Matsumoto it takes roughly one and a half hours by train and bus.

Why travel to Kamikochi?

The scenery is the first draw. From Kappa Bridge you look up the Azusa River to the Hotaka range, the most photographed view in the valley. Taisho Pond formed when an eruption of Mt. Yakedake dammed the river and left dead trees standing in the water. Myojin Pond is beside a shrine while smaller spring-fed ponds such as Tashiro and Tokusawa are clear enough to mirror the mountains. Dakesawa Marsh has wooden walkways through the wetland. The second reason is easy walking, since a mostly flat path follows the river for hours. Walking from Taisho Pond to Myojin Pond and back to the bus terminal takes about four hours over roughly 8 mi. Experienced climbers can continue up Yakedake, Nishi-Hotaka or Yari, the pointed peak called Japan's Matterhorn. The seasons shape the trip. Fresh green and snow on the peaks mark mid-May and June. Leaves turn from mid-to-late September and the forests glow gold in late October. Crowds peak from mid-July through August and on October weekends. Day trips work from Matsumoto, but a night in the valley gives you quiet mornings.

Knowledge before you go

  • Check opening dates first because the valley closes each winter.
  • Pack an extra layer and rain gear even in summer, since mornings and evenings can be chilly.
  • Carry cash and snacks since the valley has no banks or ATMs and few shops.
  • Never feed the wild monkeys, keep your distance from them and stay on the marked trails.

How to travel to Kamikochi

Most visitors come from Matsumoto. A private railway, the Kamikochi line, runs from Matsumoto Station to Shin-Shimashima in about 30 minutes. A bus then takes about an hour to the valley while direct buses also leave from Matsumoto Bus Terminal. From Takayama a bus goes via Hirayu Onsen. Long-distance buses run from Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto but take several hours. The Japan Rail Pass doesn't cover the trains or buses here so reservations are advised for peak days. Drivers must park at Sawando or Hirayu and switch to a bus or taxi because private cars and motorcycles are banned all year. Tour buses are also restricted in peak season.

Access summary

  • From Matsumoto Airport (MMJ): Bus via Matsumoto Station, about 3.5–4 hours.
  • From Tokyo (Shinjuku): Direct highway bus or train+bus combo, around 4–6 hours.
  • Private cars banned in Kamikochi; transfer to shuttle buses at gateways.

Where to stay in Kamikochi

Lodging in the valley is limited and seasonal. The official list includes about 18 facilities, from hotels near Taisho Pond and the bus terminal to lodges at Tokusawa and mountain huts higher up. Three campsites operate at Konashidaira, Tokusawa and Yokoo while some hotels let day visitors use their baths. Matsumoto is the main alternative base for day trips while Hirayu Onsen on the Takayama side is another option. Everything shuts for winter, so check opening dates. Book early for mid-July to August and for October weekends when autumn color draws the biggest crowds. Staying overnight gives you the valley to yourself in the early morning.

How to get around Kamikochi

Kamikochi is a walking destination and the bus terminal is the hub for everything.

Trails:
A flat trail follows the Azusa River between Taisho Pond in the south and Tokusawa in the north.
Kappa Bridge is a few minutes on foot from the bus terminal. Buses stop at Taisho Pond too, so you can ride one way and walk back. Taisho Pond to Tashiro Bridge is a 1 mi walk.

Conditions and supplies:
The visitor center is free and usually open daily from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
The valley has no ATMs or large shops so plan supplies before you arrive. Trails can be icy from October to June and private cars can't enter at all.

Food in Kamikochi

Food is simple and concentrated near Kappa Bridge and the bus terminal. Several restaurants and cafes serve hot meals and snacks there while hotels offer dinner and breakfast to overnight guests. Mountain huts also serve meals if you plan a longer hike. Facilities are seasonal, so some places open late in April and close in mid-November. Outside the central area, shops are few. Carry water and trail snacks if you plan to walk far from the terminal. Supplies are sold around the bus terminal and in hotel lobbies, but the valley has no large stores. Bring a picnic from Matsumoto if you want more choice.

Safety information overview

General safety
8
Kamikochi is very safe from crime. The main risks come from the mountain setting, such as sudden cold and rain, icy trails from October to June and wild animals including monkeys. Climbs above the valley need proper planning and gear.
Health & Medical
6
Medical facilities in the valley are very limited so serious cases mean a long transfer toward Matsumoto. English-speaking care is limited. At about 1,500 meters the air is cool and mornings can be cold, so carry layers and any medication you need.
Accessibility
5
The main valley trails along the river are mostly flat and some have wooden boardwalks, which suits slow walkers. Distances add up though and buses stop near the main sights. Mountain routes are steep and unsuitable for wheelchairs.
Tap water
8
Tap water is safe to drink here, as across Japan, so there's no need to buy bottled water. A refillable bottle is useful on the long river walks while hotels and shops near the terminal also sell drinks.
