Why travel to Kinugawa-Onsen?
Kinugawa Onsen is a place to soak in hot spring baths above a river gorge. Large hotels and ryokan (traditional inns) are built along the cliffs over the Kinugawa and the spring water is clear, soft and mildly alkaline. Several hotels have open-air baths facing the valley. The town also has public bathhouses and day-use baths, so even a short stop can include an onsen. The Kinugawa Line Kudari boat ride covers about 3.5 mi of the river in roughly 40 minutes. Two boatmen steer a flat-bottomed wooden boat past rock formations and gentle rapids. Wild cherry blossoms bloom in spring and the leaves turn red in autumn. Ryuokyo Gorge is a short train or bus ride upriver. It has a mostly flat trail of about 3.5 mi past waterfalls and rock formations, with the leaves usually at their best from late October to early November. Families also come for Tobu World Square, which has more than 100 models of famous buildings at a 1 to 25 scale. Edo Wonderland is a theme park that recreates an Edo-period town with samurai and ninja shows. One night is enough for a soak, the boat and one nearby sight while a second night leaves time for the Ryuokyo hike. Kinugawa Onsen also works as the hot spring end of a Nikko trip since Toshogu Shrine is about 15 mi away. The resort grew fast in the decades when companies sent employees on group trips. Several of the large hotels from that era have since closed and are empty along the riverbank, so parts of the valley look worn next to the hotels still in business. If a trip is mostly about historic sights, staying in Nikko itself fits better than staying here.

Knowledge before you go
- The river boat runs only from mid-April into November.
- Some hotels are a short drive from the station, so ask about a shuttle when you book.
- Nikko Pass is sold only to foreign visitors and covers local trains and buses, not limited express fares.
- Kinugawa means angry demon river and a demon statue called Kinuta, the town mascot, greets you outside the station.
How to travel to Kinugawa-Onsen
The easiest way to reach Kinugawa Onsen is the Tobu Railway limited express. It runs direct from Asakusa in about two hours and from Shinjuku in about the same time on a through service shared with JR East. The limited express needs a separate ticket on top of the base fare and the Japan Rail Pass doesn't cover it because Tobu is a private railway. Slower trains from Asakusa take about two and a half hours. On scheduled days the steam train SL Taiju covers the last 7.5 mi from Shimo-Imaichi in about 35 minutes with a reserved seat. Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT) airports connect to Asakusa or Shinjuku by train. From the north, the Tohoku Shinkansen to Utsunomiya connects to the JR Nikko Line for Imaichi (about 40 minutes). From there it's a short walk to Shimo-Imaichi and about 20 minutes on the Tobu Kinugawa Line. Drivers take the Tohoku Expressway to Utsunomiya and the Nikko Utsunomiya Road to Imaichi IC. National Route 121 then takes about 20 minutes, which puts Tokyo roughly two to three hours away depending on traffic. In winter the mountain roads can freeze, so studless tires or chains are recommended.
Access summary
- From Narita (NRT): Narita Express to Utsunomiya (90 min), local bus 30 min.
- From Tokyo (Shinjuku): JR Tokaido line to Utsunomiya (50 min), bus 30 min.
- From Kyoto: JR Tokaido line to Utsunomiya (120 min), bus 30 min.
Where to stay in Kinugawa-Onsen
Kinugawa Onsen is built around large hotel ryokan overlooking the river, so staying in town is the natural choice. Dozens of hotels and inns range from big resort-style properties with many kinds of baths to small inns with private open-air baths. A traditional stay usually means a tatami room with futon bedding, a multi-course dinner, a Japanese breakfast and a yukata (cotton robe) to wear around the building and to the baths. The area around Kinugawa Onsen Station is the easiest if you arrive by train. The boat departure point is about five minutes' walk away and several hotels are within a few minutes of the station. Hotels a little outside the center, including some in the Taki area on the west bank, are a short drive away and some run a shuttle that may carry a charge. Kawaji Onsen, about 20 minutes further up the Tobu line, is a quieter base with its own ryokan and gorge setting, while Nikko itself is the better base if the shrines are the main goal. Weekends and the late October to early November foliage period fill up faster while many hotels have parking if you're driving.

How to get around Kinugawa-Onsen
The core of Kinugawa Onsen is compact and walkable, while Tobu buses and taxis cover the rest.
Around town:
Many hotels and the boat departure point are a short stroll from the station. The town is in a narrow valley served by four Tobu stations with Kinugawa Onsen Station as the hub and the bus terminal right outside.
Buses:
A local bus runs about every 30 minutes from the station to Tobu World Square, a ride of around 3 minutes. It goes on to Edo Wonderland, about 15 to 20 minutes away with the Nikko Pass covering that bus.
Taxis and ropeway:
A taxi to Edo Wonderland takes around 10 minutes. The ropeway is about 1.5 mi from the station, so a courtesy shuttle or a short taxi ride works better than walking.
Trains and cars:
Trains are the quickest way up the gorge, with Ryuokyo Station about 12 minutes away. Nikko's shrines are reached by changing trains at Shimo-Imaichi and taking a bus beyond. A car mainly helps for the ropeway and the remote hot spring villages further up the river while for the station area and the boat it adds little.
Food in Kinugawa-Onsen
Food here mostly happens at the hotel, where dinner and breakfast are usually part of the room rate and buffets feature seasonal dishes. Multi-course dinners with local ingredients are common at the larger ryokan. The Nikko area is known for yuba (tofu skin served in many forms) and river fish such as trout.
A few restaurants and cafes around the station cater to day visitors. Options are limited late in the evening, so plan to eat at your hotel or before 8:00 PM if you're staying in another town. Convenience stores near the station cover snacks and breakfast. Vegetarians and others with dietary needs should tell the hotel in advance since many set meals include fish and meat.
