Castle, neon canals and street food

Osaka is one of Japan's biggest cities and the one most associated with eating, from takoyaki and okonomiyaki stalls to the neon signs of Dotonbori. The commercial center of the Kansai region has two downtown hubs. Kita, around Umeda, is the business and shopping district. Minami, around Namba, has the food streets. Osaka Castle is in a large park and its rebuilt tower holds a museum. Visitors can also go up the Tsutenkaku tower in Shinsekai or see the Kaiyukan aquarium. Since the Shinkansen stops at Shin-Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe are easy day trips from a hotel here. A few days is enough for the main areas.

Why travel to Osaka?

Osaka is known across Japan for eating well, with the local word kuidaore describing spending freely on food. Takoyaki, okonomiyaki and kushikatsu all have strong ties to the city. Dotonbori's canal-side streets are lined with places that serve them under oversized neon signs. The main historic sight is Osaka Castle. Its tower was rebuilt in 1931 and now holds a museum on Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the Sengoku period. Many of the surrounding stone walls, moats and gates date from the Tokugawa period. Other stops include the Tsutenkaku tower in Shinsekai, the observatory at the Umeda Sky Building and the Kaiyukan aquarium. Universal Studios Japan, home to Super Nintendo World, is on the bay side away from the center and needs a day to itself. The city also works as a base for the Kansai region. Kyoto is about 15 minutes from Shin-Osaka by Shinkansen while Kobe and Nara are short rides on regular trains. Compared with Kyoto, the city is louder and more casual, with more of its appeal in food and nightlife than in temples. Two or three days covers the main areas and a few more leave time for day trips.

How to travel to Osaka

Most visitors arrive by Shinkansen or through Kansai International Airport (KIX). Shin-Osaka is the Shinkansen station, about 2.5 hours from Tokyo on the fastest trains and about 15 minutes from Kyoto. Highway buses from Tokyo take around 8 hours. A drive takes about 6 hours or more depending on traffic. From KIX, Nankai's Rapi:t trains reach Namba in about 34 to 39 minutes. JR's Haruka express reaches Tennoji in about 30 minutes and Shin-Osaka in about 50. Itami Airport (ITM) handles domestic flights, with limousine buses into the city. Flights from Tokyo take about an hour in the air. Kyoto, Kobe and Nara are linked with Osaka by Hankyu, Hanshin, Keihan, Kintetsu and JR lines, so they fit easily into a single trip.

Access summary

  • From Kansai Airport (KIX): Nankai/JR trains to Namba/Umeda, about 40–70 minutes.
  • From Tokyo: Tokaido Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka Station, usually around 2.5–3 hours.
  • From Kyoto: Frequent JR or private-line trains to Osaka, typically 15–30 minutes.

Where to stay in Osaka

Most visitors choose between two bases. Umeda in Kita has the most business hotels and is the easiest area for Hankyu trains to Kyoto and Kobe and for the Midosuji subway line. Namba in Minami puts you next to Dotonbori's food and nightlife and has the Nankai line direct to Kansai Airport. Shin-Osaka has business hotels beside the Shinkansen station, which suits an early train. Tennoji and Shinsekai have budget hotels and hostels. The bay side near Universal Studios Japan has hotels that suit theme park trips. Kyoto, Kobe and Nara are all a short train ride away, which makes the city a handy base for day trips. Rooms fill up in late March and early April for the cherry blossoms, during Golden Week and around the Tenjin Matsuri in late July, so book early at those times.

How to get around Osaka

Central Osaka has two hubs, Kita around Osaka Station and Minami around Namba. The Midosuji subway line links them and goes on to Tennoji in the southeast. Trains and subways are the easiest way to get around the center.

Subway:
Osaka Metro runs eight subway lines inside the area ringed by the JR Osaka Loop Line.
Most sights and both hubs are on or close to one of them.

Trains:
The JR Osaka Loop Line goes around the center much like Tokyo's Yamanote Line.
Shin-Osaka, where the Shinkansen stops, is one JR stop north of Osaka Station.

Cards and passes:
An ICOCA card, sold at JR ticket machines, saves buying a ticket for each ride.
Day passes are worth a look if you plan several rides and sights. The Osaka Amazing Pass covers subways and city buses plus entry to selected attractions. The Enjoy Eco Card covers unlimited subway and city bus rides for a day.

Taxis and cars:
Taxis are easy to find and useful after the last trains.
A car isn't needed in the city and is more trouble than help for most visits.

Food in Osaka

Osaka is known as the kitchen of Japan and its food culture is built on casual comfort food and street snacks. Dotonbori and Shinsekai have the densest clusters of restaurants and stalls.

Takoyaki:
Takoyaki are batter balls filled with octopus and topped with sauce, mayonnaise, seaweed and bonito flakes.
They're sold hot from street stalls and small shops, especially around Dotonbori.

Okonomiyaki:
Okonomiyaki is a savory pancake of egg, flour, grated yam and shredded cabbage.
It's often cooked on a griddle in front of you.

Kushikatsu:
Kushikatsu are breaded and deep-fried skewers of meat, seafood and vegetables.
They're said to have started in Shinsekai in 1929 and the area still has many kushikatsu shops.

Department stores have food halls in their basements while convenience stores and supermarkets are everywhere. Bonito flakes and fish stock go into many dishes, so strict vegetarians will need to ask about ingredients.

Safety information overview

General safety
9
Osaka is generally safe, with low violent crime and busy streets late into the night. Pickpockets and touts working the crowds around Dotonbori and Namba are the usual issues. The Nishinari area south of Shinsekai has a rougher reputation, so take care there after dark.
Health & Medical
9
Hospitals, clinics and pharmacies are plentiful in the center. English-speaking care is limited outside larger hospitals and international clinics, so travel insurance is worth having. Summers are hot and humid, so heatstroke is a real risk from July to September.
Accessibility
8
Osaka is mostly flat and its metro stations have elevators, though routes through large hubs like Umeda and Namba can involve long walks and detours. Dotonbori's food streets are narrow and crowded at peak times and Osaka Castle's grounds have gravel paths and stairs.
Tap water
9
Tap water in Osaka is safe to drink, as in the rest of Japan. Vending machines and convenience stores sell bottled water and tea on almost every block. Refilling a bottle at your hotel is the cheapest option in the hot and humid summer.
