Best winter illumination destinations in Asia

Elaborate neon festivals and synchronized light tunnels across Asia

East Asian cities turn entire districts into large-scale lighting installations each winter, drawing crowds specifically for the display rather than any single landmark. A northern region adds its own snow-and-light festival further north.

The destinations on this list range from large-scale urban illumination events spanning entire shopping districts to snow festivals that combine ice sculpture with elaborate lighting after dark. Both run on a tightly defined seasonal calendar.

Visiting on weekday evenings tends to mean considerably smaller crowds at the most popular illumination events. Local tourism offices typically publish exact illumination schedules each year, since dates can shift slightly from one season to the next. Dressing warmly also matters considerably given how cold these evenings typically get. Most displays stay lit until late evening.

District in Tokyo
Odaiba

Ashikaga Flower Park
Giant wisteria trellis and winter light show
This garden north of Tokyo moved to its current site in 1997 and is known for its wisteria. In winter millions of lights turn the garden into a glowing flower display. A tunnel of light and glowing trees are the favorite spots for photos. A station named Ashikaga Flower Park makes the visit easy.
