Best nightlife destinations in Asia

Bright night markets and central entertainment districts across Asia

East Asia's biggest cities anchor the region's nightlife reputation with neighbourhoods built specifically around after-dark culture, running on a density of bars and clubs found in few other cities. Southeast Asia adds a louder, more tourist-driven scene further south.

The destinations on this list range from neon-lit entertainment districts with karaoke, clubs and late-night street food side by side to quieter speakeasy and cocktail scenes tucked into unmarked buildings. Both reward knowing exactly which neighbourhood to head to.

Checking last-train times matters considerably in several major cities, where missing the final train can mean an unplanned, expensive taxi home. Convenience stores in some cities also do a surprisingly brisk late-night trade. Carrying a small amount of local cash also tends to make late-night transactions considerably smoother in less touristy venues.

City in Tokyo
Shibuya
Tokyo's scramble crossing and youth fashion hub
Meeting at the Hachiko statue outside Shibuya Station is the classic start to a night out, followed by izakayas, karaoke and clubs in the streets of Dogenzaka and Center Gai. The famous Shibuya Crossing is busiest on weekend evenings, when thousands of people cross at once.
City in Japan
Osaka
Castle, neon canals and street food
In Minami, the southern center of Osaka, the Dotonbori canal is lined with neon signs. The narrow lanes of Hozenji and Ura Namba have tiny bars and izakayas, Japanese pubs with small plates, that stay open late. Amerikamura, a young area, has live music and casual bars.
Country
Singapore
Tropical city-state of hawker food and gardens
Clarke Quay, a stretch of restored warehouses along the Singapore River, has bars and clubs with outdoor tables. Club Street and Ann Siang Hill have cocktail bars in old shophouses, which are narrow colorful buildings. Drinks cost more here than in many other Asian cities but the city is safe and easy at night.
City in Tokyo
Shinjuku
Skyscrapers, neon bars and a huge station
Larger and more varied than Shibuya, Shinjuku has Kabukicho, a neon entertainment district of bars, karaoke and theme restaurants. Golden Gai is a block of tiny bars that seat only a handful of people each while Omoide Yokocho is a smoky alley of grill stalls.
City in Japan
Tokyo
Japan's capital of temples, towers and food
Last trains leave around midnight, so a night out in Tokyo either ends early or runs until trains start again at about five in the morning, with karaoke, izakayas and all night clubs in between. Roppongi, Shibuya and Shinjuku each have a different mood, from international clubs to tiny bars.
