Car capital with Korankei maple gorge

Toyota is a city in central Aichi Prefecture about an hour from Nagoya and the base of Toyota Motor Corporation. The urban core around its stations is built around the car industry and the Toyota Kaikan museum introduces the company's vehicles and technology. The city also extends far into the hills to the east. There the Asuke district has an old town and Korankei Gorge with thousands of Japanese maples. The museum and the autumn leaves are the two main reasons to visit. The hill districts are easier with a car or a local bus.

Why travel to Toyota?

Toyota has two sides, the car industry in the city and the autumn leaves of Korankei Gorge in the hills to the east. Korankei is on Mt. Iimori in the Asuke district and draws crowds every autumn. Several thousand Japanese maples turn red and yellow when the cold arrives. A Maple Festival takes place in November and bamboo lanterns light up Kojakuji Temple on weekend evenings. The trees are also lit in the evening. Asuke itself is best seen slowly. The old town has traditional buildings and the Sanshu Asuke Yashiki living museum shows rural life in the mountains of old Mikawa. Away from November the gorge is quiet and green. The industrial side is the Toyota Kaikan museum, which explains how the company makes cars and where its technology is heading. Factory tours can often be arranged in advance. If you like cars it's a good stop even in a short visit. Most people see Toyota as a day trip from Nagoya. If you want both the museum and the gorge, plan two days since the two are far apart. In autumn plan around traffic and crowds at Korankei.

  • Peak maple color at Korankei is usually mid to late November so aim for that window.
  • Korankei is lit from sunset until about 9:00 PM in November, so stay for the evening.

How to travel to Toyota

Trains are the easiest way from Nagoya. The Nagoya subway Tsurumai Line runs through to the Meitetsu Toyota Line and reaches Toyotashi Station in about 50 minutes to an hour. From Nagoya Station you first change to the subway. From Chubu Centrair Airport (NGO) you go to Nagoya by train and then onward. For Korankei, take a Meitetsu bus bound for Asuke from Toyotashi Station and get off at Korankei. Buses also run from Higashi Okazaki Station on the Meitetsu Nagoya Line. By car, Toyota is reached by the Tomei Expressway and the Tokai-Kanjo Expressway. Korankei is about 15 minutes from Chikaraishi Interchange on Sanage Green Road or about 20 minutes from Toyota-Kanpachi Interchange. Times vary with congestion, especially in November.

Access summary

  • From Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO): 30‑min bus to Toyota Station.
  • From Nagoya (NGO/NGO): 45‑min train via Meitetsu or JR Central.
  • By local bus from Nagoya’s central station: 1‑hour direct service.

Where to stay in Toyota

Most hotels in Toyota are business hotels near the main stations, which serve visitors to the car industry. They're simple and practical and suit a stay built around the museum or a factory visit. Korankei and Asuke have a small number of ryokan and guesthouses near the gorge. Rooms are limited and book out well ahead for the November leaf season, so reserve early or plan a day trip. Nagoya is the practical alternative. It has far more hotels and restaurants and it's about an hour away by train. If you plan to see Korankei in autumn, staying in Nagoya and traveling by bus or train can be easier than finding a room near the gorge.

How to get around Toyota

Toyota is a spread-out city. The urban core with the main stations and the museum area is in the west and the hills with Korankei and Asuke are far to the east, so the two areas need different transport.

Trains and local buses:
In the urban core trains and local buses link the main stations and the museum area.
The Meitetsu Toyota Line serves Toyotashi Station and the Aichi Loop Railway serves Mikawa-Toyota Station. Taxis fill the gaps.

Buses to Korankei:
Meitetsu buses run from Toyotashi Station to Korankei and this is the simplest option if you don't drive.
In November buses and roads get crowded, so allow extra time.

Car:
A rental car helps if you want to reach the Asuke old town, the mountain districts and other sights beyond Korankei.
Parking at the gorge in autumn costs money and fills early.

Food in Toyota

Food in Toyota is mostly home-style Japanese cooking from the Mikawa region. In the hills near Asuke look for gohei mochi, which is grilled rice on a stick with a sweet miso glaze. Ayu, a river fish, is also grilled at some restaurants near the water.

Restaurants cluster around the main stations and the Toyota Kaikan area. Korankei has food stalls and small restaurants during the November leaf season. Outside the season many places near the gorge close early or on weekdays, so check ahead.

If you want a larger choice, Nagoya is close and has plenty of regional dishes.

Safety information overview

General safety
9
Toyota is very safe with low crime in its urban core and hill districts. The main concerns are traffic and crowds. Roads to Korankei back up in November and mountain roads can be narrow. Typhoons can bring heavy rain in late summer and autumn.
Health & Medical
9
Toyota has hospitals and clinics in the city and pharmacies are common near the stations. Services are thinner in the hill districts around Asuke, so carry any regular medication. Summer heat and humidity are the main everyday concern.
Accessibility
8
The urban core is flat with lifts at the larger stations. Korankei and Asuke are harder. Paths along the gorge include steps, slopes and narrow bridges that get slow in November crowds. Buses and parking help people with limited mobility.
Tap water
10
Tap water in Toyota is safe to drink like the rest of Japan. Vending machines and convenience stores sell bottled drinks in town. In the hill districts shops are fewer, so carry a bottle if you plan to walk along the gorge.
