Beer cellars, vineyards and Baroque palaces

Franconia covers the north of Bavaria and has its own dialect and its own wine, plus more than 200 breweries in Upper Franconia alone. Nuremberg has the Imperial Castle, Würzburg a Baroque residence and Bamberg an old town with UNESCO status. The countryside in between has castles, beer cellars and hiking in places like Franconian Switzerland. Visitors can go between the three cities by train in about an hour or less. The villages and breweries in the hills are easier with a car, so a trip of several days with a mix of both works well.

English proficiency varies across Franconia. In tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants in major cities, English is widely spoken. In rural areas and among older residents, communication may be limited to basic phrases, so a few German words are helpful.

Why travel to Franconia?

Franconia has three very different cities within about an hour of each other by train. Nuremberg has the Imperial Castle, a rebuilt old town and the Christkindlesmarkt in winter. Würzburg has a UNESCO-listed Baroque residence and a fortress above the Main with vineyards on the slopes. Bamberg's old town is also on the UNESCO list, with a cathedral on its hill and a tradition of smoked beer. Bayreuth is known for the Wagner festival in summer. Its Baroque opera house, built of wood, is a UNESCO site too. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a walled town on the Romantic Road, which starts in Würzburg. Outside the cities, the landscape and the drinking culture are the other reasons to come. Franconian Switzerland between Bamberg, Bayreuth and Nuremberg is hiking and climbing country with about 70 breweries. Along the Main, the vineyards around Würzburg grow mostly white wine, with dry Silvaner as the classic. The Rhön, Spessart and Fichtelgebirge are quieter uplands for walking. Bad Kissingen is a spa town that belongs to the Great Spa Towns of Europe UNESCO listing. Four to six days is enough to see Nuremberg, Bamberg and Würzburg by train and add a day in the countryside. With only a weekend, one city and one rural area make a better trip than trying to cover all three cities. The region also combines easily with Munich or Frankfurt at either end.

🏙️Cities & Regions
  • 1 Nuremberg
The second-largest city in Bavaria, on the Pegnitz river in Franconia, with a walled old town and an imperial castle above it. It's known for its Christmas market, small grilled sausages and Nazi-era sites that are open to visitors.
  • 2 Würzburg
A lively university city on the Main river with a UNESCO listed baroque palace and a hilltop fortress. Vineyards reach the edge of the old town and fast trains from Frankfurt and Nuremberg arrive in about an hour.
  • 3 Bayreuth
A small Franconian town known worldwide for the annual Wagner festival and a UNESCO listed baroque opera house. The center is compact and walkable and trains from Nuremberg reach the station in about an hour.
  • 4 Rothenburg ob der Tauber
A walled medieval town above the Tauber valley in Bavaria, on the Romantic Road. The town wall is lined with towers and open for walking. The old town is quietest in the evening, after the day-trip groups leave.
  • 5 Bamberg
A UNESCO-listed old town on the Regnitz River in Upper Franconia, with a medieval cathedral, riverside fishermen's houses and a long beer tradition. Smoked beer is the local specialty while Nuremberg is about half an hour away by train.

Knowledge before you go

  • Bayern-Tickets cover up to five people on regional trains, weekdays from 9:00 AM.
  • Beer served with little foam isn't stale. Franconian brewers often store it without pressure, which keeps more aroma.
  • Tickets and hotel rooms for the Bayreuth Festival in summer need booking far ahead.
  • The Fünf-Seidla-Steig in Franconian Switzerland is a hike of about 11 mi past five breweries serving Kellerbier from the barrel.

How to travel to Franconia

Nuremberg Airport (NUE) is the main gateway, with flights from many European cities and a U2 metro line that reaches the main station in about 12 minutes. For Würzburg and Lower Franconia, Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is often more practical, with trains to Würzburg taking under two hours. By train, ICE services reach Nuremberg from Munich in about an hour and from Berlin in around three hours. Würzburg is on the ICE line between Frankfurt and Nuremberg and Bamberg is on the line between Berlin and Nuremberg. By car, the A3 goes from Frankfurt through Würzburg to Nuremberg, the A9 links Berlin and Munich via Nuremberg and the A7 comes down from Hamburg to Würzburg. Driving takes about two hours from Munich to Nuremberg and about five hours from Berlin.

Access summary

  • From Nuremberg Airport (NUE): U‑Bahn or taxi to center, about 15–25 minutes.
  • From Nuremberg city: Regional trains to Franconian towns (Bamberg, Würzburg) 40–90 minutes.
  • From Frankfurt Airport (FRA): Direct ICE trains to Franconia, usually 2–3 hours.

Where to stay in Franconia

Most visitors stay in Nuremberg, Würzburg or Bamberg, where the choice runs from large hotels to guesthouses and apartments in or near the old towns. In the countryside, Franconia has inns (Gasthöfe) with a few rooms above the restaurant or brewery, as well as farm stays, holiday apartments and campsites around the hills and lakes. Nuremberg works well as a base for day trips by train, since Bamberg, Bayreuth and Würzburg are each about an hour away. Staying in the old town of Bamberg or Würzburg puts the main sights and the wine and beer taverns within walking distance. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is much quieter in the evening, so an overnight stay lets you see it without the daytime crowds. Rooms fill up and prices rise in Nuremberg during the Christkindlesmarkt in late November and December and during big trade fairs. For the Rhön, Franconian Switzerland or the Steigerwald, a village inn or holiday apartment is more convenient than a city base, since trailheads and breweries are close by.

How to get around Franconia

Franconia is large, but its main cities are well linked by rail. Regional trains and buses reach most towns, while remote villages and hiking areas usually need a car.

Trains:
ICE and regional trains link Nuremberg, Würzburg, Bamberg and Bayreuth.
Regional expresses between Nuremberg and Bayreuth run about every 30 minutes. The Deutschlandticket is valid on regional trains but not on ICE or IC services.

City transit:
Nuremberg has a U-Bahn plus trams and buses run by VAG.
Würzburg has trams and Bamberg's old town is compact enough to walk.

Buses:
Regional buses fill the gaps in places like Franconian Switzerland.
They usually run less often than trains, especially on weekends, so check the timetable before setting out on a hike.

Car:
A car helps for Franconian Switzerland, the Steigerwald and wine villages away from the rail lines.
The A73 links Nuremberg and Bamberg and the A70 goes on to Bayreuth. Old town centers often restrict cars, so parking at the edge is easier.

Bikes:
The Main cycle path goes along the river from the Bayreuth area to Würzburg.
Cycling suits the river valleys and e-bikes help on the hills of Franconian Switzerland.

Food in Franconia

Food in Franconia is hearty and regional, with pork, sausages, dumplings and freshwater fish on most menus and local beer or white wine alongside. Traditional inns and brewery taverns serve the full range, while bakeries and supermarkets make self-catering easy. Village inns can have few vegetarian dishes, so it helps to check menus in advance.

Bratwurst:
Nuremberg's small grilled sausages come in portions of six or more with sauerkraut or potato salad.
Some people order three in a bread roll instead. Other Franconian towns have their own regional sausage styles.

Schäufele:
Roast pork shoulder with crispy crackling, usually served with a potato dumpling (Kloß) and gravy.
It's a staple at traditional inns across the region.

Carp:
Carp from the Aischgrund area is usually baked or fried and is a seasonal dish, with the season running from about September to April.

Beer:
Beer is the main drink in Upper Franconia, from Kellerbier and malty Märzen to the smoked Rauchbier of Bamberg.
Brewery taverns and seasonal beer cellars (Keller) serve it in half-liter stone mugs called Seidla.

Wine:
White wine from the Main valley around Würzburg, especially dry Silvaner, often comes in the flat Bocksbeutel bottle.
Many villages have wine taverns (Weinstuben) and hold wine festivals through the summer.

Safety information overview

General safety
8
Franconia is very safe for visitors. Pickpockets operate in crowds such as the Nuremberg Christmas market and around main stations, so keep valuables close. Rock edges and slippery paths in Franconian Switzerland need some care on hikes.
Health & Medical
9
Medical care is excellent, with major hospitals in Nuremberg, Erlangen and Würzburg and clinics in most towns. Ticks can carry tick-borne encephalitis and several Franconian districts are risk areas, so cover up on forest hikes and ask a doctor about vaccination.
Accessibility
5
Old towns have cobblestones and slopes. The approaches to Nuremberg's Imperial Castle and Würzburg's Marienberg Fortress are steep. Larger stations and city transit are mostly step-free, but small stops and village buses can be harder. Trails in Franconian Switzerland are rough and rocky.
Tap water
9
Tap water is safe to drink throughout Franconia. In limestone areas like Franconian Switzerland it's often hard, which leaves limescale but doesn't affect safety. Restaurants usually serve bottled water, so for hikes it makes sense to fill a bottle at your hotel.
