Best solo travel destinations in Europe
Walkable old town quarters and efficient regional train routes in Europe
Europe is where most people start, and for good reason. The trains connect cities across borders, the hostels have been running for decades, and the distances between completely different cultures are short enough that you can wake up in one country and fall asleep in another. The infrastructure makes solo travel here about as easy as it gets, which is why it works for first-timers and experienced travelers equally well.
That doesn't mean it's all the same. The difference between solo travel in Scandinavia and solo travel in the Balkans is significant – in cost, in culture, in how easy it is to meet people, and in how much English you can rely on. Western Europe is polished and predictable. Eastern and Southern Europe tend to be cheaper, rougher around the edges, and often more rewarding for solo travelers who want something with a bit more texture.
The destinations on this list cover both. Some are classic backpacker stops where the hostel bar does the social work for you. Others are cities where the café culture, the pub scene, or the walking tours create openings for connection without forcing it. A few are quieter places for solo travelers who chose to travel alone because they actually wanted to be alone.
