Hagi castle town, Iwakuni bridge and fugu

Yamaguchi Prefecture is at the western tip of Honshu and faces Kyushu across the Kanmon Strait. It has coasts on the Sea of Japan and the Seto Inland Sea. Its best known sights are spread across several towns. Hagi is a former castle town with samurai streets and Iwakuni has the five-arched wooden Kintaikyo Bridge. Akiyoshidai has a limestone plateau and cave. Shimonoseki is a seafood port known for its fugu. Distances between sights are long, so it suits a trip built around two or three bases rather than a single day out.

Why travel to Yamaguchi?

Yamaguchi has several towns that each suit a different trip and Hagi is the one with the most history. Its five World Heritage sites belong to the Meiji Industrial Revolution listing. The town is also known for Hagi ware pottery and for its streets of old merchant and samurai houses, which are easy to walk. It was an important domain in the years leading up to the Meiji Restoration. Iwakuni is the next stop. Kintaikyo Bridge crosses the Nishiki River on five wooden arches and nearby Kikko Park is a popular spot for cherry blossoms in spring and leaf color in autumn. Shimonoseki is a seafood town where the Karato market and the Kaikyokan aquarium are the main sights and fugu is the famous dish. Nature is the other draw. Akiyoshidai is a limestone plateau with Akiyoshido, described as the largest limestone cave in Japan. Along the northwest coast Motonosumi Shrine and Tsunoshima Bridge are well-known coastal views. Three or four days works well if you pick Hagi and Iwakuni plus one of the other areas. Yamaguchi is also a natural link between Hiroshima and Fukuoka, so it fits an overland trip across western Japan.

🏙️Cities & Regions
  • 1 Iwakuni
A castle town in Yamaguchi on the Nishiki River, known for the five-arched wooden Kintai Bridge. It also has a hilltop castle with a ropeway and rare white snakes, about 15 minutes on the Shinkansen from Hiroshima.
  • 2 Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park
A limestone plateau in Mine, Yamaguchi, scattered with white rock outcrops and grassland above limestone caves. You can walk through Akiyoshido Cave, then take the elevator up to the open plateau and drive the scenic Karst Road.

🍽️Eat & Drink

  • 2 Karato Market Food Court
Seafood rice bowls, sushi and fugu, or pufferfish, set meals from small counter restaurants on the second floor of a fish market. Several are run by fishmongers who work the stalls below and use fish bought that morning.
  • 3 Kawara Soba Yanagiya Hagi Joukamachi
Kawara soba, green tea buckwheat noodles on a sizzling Sekishu roof tile, topped with shredded egg crepe, beef and fresh garnishes. It is a regional specialty. The restaurant has a branch in the castle town of Hagi.
  • 4 Choshuya Yuda
Izakaya dishes including kawara soba, fugu hot pot and grilled skewers of Choshu-dori, a local chicken breed. Staff also serve tataki-style kuro-kashiwa chicken. It is on the main street, a 10-minute walk from Yuda Onsen Station.

Knowledge before you go

  • Hagi and Iwakuni are far apart, so plan separate days.
  • Fugu must be prepared by licensed chefs, so eat it only at proper restaurants.
  • A short ferry links Shimonoseki's Karato area with Moji across the strait in about five minutes.
  • Hagi's five World Heritage sites are spread around the town, so bicycles help you link them.

How to travel to Yamaguchi

The Sanyo Shinkansen is the easiest way to arrive. Shin-Iwakuni, Tokuyama, Shin-Yamaguchi and Shin-Shimonoseki all have stops. Hakata in Fukuoka and Hiroshima are each under an hour away on the fastest trains. Osaka is roughly 2 hours away. Some through services run from Tokyo. Yamaguchi Ube Airport (UBJ) has flights from Haneda in Tokyo taking about two hours. Iwakuni Kintaikyo Airport (IWK) also has flights from Tokyo. Fukuoka Airport (FUK) is a common alternative for international arrivals and connects by shinkansen. From Shin-Yamaguchi or Yamaguchi city, buses run to Hagi in about an hour to an hour and a half. By car the expressways link Yamaguchi with Hiroshima and Fukuoka and the Kanmon bridge connects the prefecture with Kyushu.

Access summary

  • From Okayama Airport (OKJ): Bus to Okayama, Shinkansen to Shin‑Yamaguchi, total ~1.5h.

Where to stay in Yamaguchi

Hagi, Iwakuni and Shimonoseki are the main bases and each suits a different trip. Hagi has ryokan and small guesthouses close to the castle town. Iwakuni has hotels and inns within reach of Kintaikyo Bridge. Shimonoseki has business hotels and seafood restaurants near its waterfront. For hot springs, Yuda Onsen near Yamaguchi city and Yumoto Onsen near Nagato have ryokan with baths. Shin-Yamaguchi has business hotels next to the shinkansen station, which suit a short stop or an early start. Book early for cherry blossom time and autumn leaves in Iwakuni and Hagi. If you can only stay one night, Hagi is a good choice for atmosphere.

How to get around Yamaguchi

Yamaguchi is large and trains cover only part of it, so plan by area. The south coast has Iwakuni, Shin-Yamaguchi and Shimonoseki. Hagi and the northern coast are served by a different line.

Trains:
The Sanyo Shinkansen and JR Sanyo Line run along the south coast through Iwakuni and Shin-Yamaguchi to Shimonoseki.
The JR San'in Line serves Hagi and the northern coast. Local trains are infrequent in the countryside and buses fill some gaps.

Walking and bikes:
Towns are easier to explore once you arrive.
Hagi's castle town is flat and walkable and bicycles are popular there too. In Iwakuni a short bus ride from the station reaches Kintaikyo Bridge. In Shimonoseki the Karato waterfront can be reached on foot or by bus from the station.

Car:
A rental car is the practical choice for Akiyoshidai and for the northern coast with Motonosumi Shrine and Tsunoshima Bridge.
If you stay in one or two towns and use trains between them, you can do without a car.

Food in Yamaguchi

Food in Yamaguchi is built around seafood. The Karato market and restaurants nearby are the place to try fresh fish and Hagi has its own seafood from the Sea of Japan.

Fugu:
Fugu, the blowfish, is the famous Shimonoseki specialty and is served as sashimi or in a hot pot in winter.

Local specialties:
Kawara soba is a local noodle dish served on a heated roof tile.
Iwakuni is known for its pressed box sushi.

In small towns many restaurants close in the early evening, so book dinner or eat at your lodging. If you're traveling by car along the northern coast, shops and restaurants can be far apart.
