Sandstone towers and Elbe valley hikes

Saxon Switzerland is a sandstone landscape upriver from Dresden with cliffs, rock towers and narrow gorges spread through the forests. Visitors can hike to the Bastei bridge above the river or walk up to Königstein Fortress on its plateau. Bad Schandau is the main town and a tram goes from there into the national park. The Czech border is close and the same rock scenery continues in Bohemian Switzerland. Trails are well marked and many start at S-Bahn stops, so you can do this without a car. If you want more than a day, the multi-day Malerweg trail links the main viewpoints.

Why travel to Saxon Switzerland?

Sandstone shapes everything here. Erosion has cut ravines through the rock and left isolated towers, tabletop mountains and long walls. Hikers move between them on paths with ladders, iron stairs and viewing platforms. The best known viewpoint is the Bastei, a rock ridge about 600 ft above the Elbe with a stone bridge from 1851 that's 250 ft long. Königstein Fortress is the other major sight. It's on a plateau of about 1,000,000 sq ft with more than 50 buildings and a wall walk of about 1 mi. Plan two to three hours there and note that last entry is one hour before closing. The national park covers about 36 sq mi in two parts and is Germany's only non-alpine rock national park. Across the border in Bohemian Switzerland the Prebischtor, a large natural sandstone arch near Hřensko, is a short trip from Bad Schandau. Many visitors come for a day from Dresden but two or three nights leave time for the Kirnitzsch valley and the Elbe valley ferries. Weekends from spring to autumn are busy at the Bastei so early mornings and weekdays are calmer. Winter is quieter though paths can be icy.

Knowledge before you go

  • Stay on marked paths because the park's core zones are strictly protected.
  • Fires, smoking, drones and camping are banned in the national park while dogs must be on a leash.
  • The Bastei viewpoint is free and open at all times but parking is limited, so take a bus.
  • Sleeping under rock overhangs, called Boofen, is reserved for climbers and banned from February to mid-June for conservation reasons.

How to travel to Saxon Switzerland

Trains are the easiest way in. Long-distance trains serve Dresden and Bad Schandau directly and the S1 from Dresden Hauptbahnhof follows the Elbe to Bad Schandau in under an hour. From Prague the train via Děčín takes around two hours. The Nationalparkbahn U28 also runs from Děčín through Bad Schandau to Sebnitz and Rumburk. If you drive, the A17 and A4 are the fastest routes. Switch from the A4 to the A17 at the Dresden-West junction and leave at Pirna for the western part. For the eastern part use the A4 exit at Radeberg and for the Bastei turn off the B6 at Stolpen. Park-and-ride lots help because parking inside the park is limited. The nearest major airport is Dresden Airport (DRS) and from there the S2 reaches Dresden Hauptbahnhof in about 20 minutes and you change to the S1. In season a historic paddle steamer also runs from Pirna to Hřensko from mid-April to the end of October.

Access summary

  • From Dresden Airport: Train to Dresden Hbf, then S-Bahn to Bad Schandau (≈2 h).
  • From Leipzig Hauptbahnhof: Direct regional train to Bad Schandau (~1 h 45 min).
  • From Munich Hauptbahnhof: Long-distance ICE to Dresden, then S-Bahn (≈5 h total).

Where to stay in Saxon Switzerland

Bad Schandau is the main base with hotels, guesthouses, the station and the NationalparkZentrum. It also has the Kirnitzschtalbahn and Elbe ferries close at hand. Königstein is a good choice if you want the fortress and the S1 nearby and Pirna works for a first or last night near the western end of the region. Kurort Rathen is small and next to the Bastei side of the park. Hohnstein and Hinterhermsdorf are quieter villages for longer hikes away from the Elbe. Holiday apartments and private rooms are common and camping is allowed only on official campsites. Dresden has far more hotels and works as a base if you don't mind the S-Bahn ride. Weekends from spring to autumn and the Advent period fill up early so it's worth booking ahead. Overnight guests in most host towns receive the Gästekarte mobil.

How to get around Saxon Switzerland

The region is spread along both banks of the Elbe with Pirna at the western edge and Bad Schandau and Königstein as the main hubs. Overnight guests at many hosts get the Gästekarte mobil with free regional buses and trains. Most hikes can be done without a car.

S-Bahn:
The S1 follows the Elbe and links Dresden and Meißen with the region.
It runs every 30 minutes between Pirna and Bad Schandau and hourly between Bad Schandau and Schöna.

Buses:
Regional buses serve the rest of the national park area with transfer points at Pirna ZOB, Reißiger Platz in Königstein and the Nationalparkbahnhof in Bad Schandau.
Lines 237, 239 and 254 go to the Bastei.

Kirnitzschtalbahn:
This tram goes from Bad Schandau to the Lichtenhainer Wasserfall in the Kirnitzsch valley.
It has run for over 120 years and is step-free.

Ferries:
Eight ferry points carry hikers across the Elbe, which makes one-way routes easy.
The Wanderschiff goes up to four times a day from Bad Schandau via Schmilka to Hřensko.

Car:
You can usually leave the car at your accommodation or use the park-and-ride lots in Pirna, Bad Schandau and Sebnitz.
Parking is scarce in the Kirnitzsch valley and fees rise the deeper you drive into the park.

Food in Saxon Switzerland

Food here is hearty Saxon cooking with simple dishes in village inns and mountain huts along the trails. Bad Schandau and Königstein have the widest choice. Opening hours in smaller places can be short and many close one day a week, so carry snacks on long hikes. Supermarkets and bakeries in Bad Schandau and Pirna make it easy to pack a lunch.

Eierschecke:
This Saxon cake has a base topped with a quark layer and an egg custard.
You'll find it at most cafes in the region.

Quarkkeulchen:
These are fried pancakes made from quark and potato and are usually served with apple sauce.
They show up on menus as a main dish or dessert.

Sauerbraten:
Saxon Sauerbraten is marinated beef roast served with dumplings and red cabbage.
It's a common main course in village inns.

Safety information overview

General safety
9
Saxon Switzerland is safe with little crime and the main risks come from the terrain. Trails have exposed drops and steep ladders and the sandstone is slippery after rain. Dry summers bring wildfire risk and fire bans, so carry a charged phone on long hikes.
Health & Medical
8
Bad Schandau and Pirna have doctors and pharmacies and Pirna has a hospital, while Dresden's larger hospitals are within reach by train. Trails can be far from help. Ticks are common in the forests and tick-borne encephalitis occurs in parts of Saxony.
Accessibility
4
Many trails have steep stairs, ladders and uneven rock, so hiking is hard with limited mobility. At the Bastei only the viewpoint is step-free and the bridge isn't. The Kirnitzschtalbahn tram is step-free and Königstein Fortress has a lift and mostly step-free exhibitions.
Tap water
9
Tap water in the towns is safe to drink. Shops and cafes in Bad Schandau and Königstein sell bottled water too. Huts and kiosks on the trails can be far apart, so fill a bottle before you start and don't drink from streams.
