Why travel to Heidelberg?
Heidelberg Castle is the main reason to come. The ruin is on a hillside above the old town and the ticket covers the courtyard, the Great Barrel (a huge wine barrel) and the German Pharmacy Museum. The Bergbahn funicular goes up from the Kornmarkt, which saves the steep climb. The castle grounds and views over the old town and the Neckar are a highlight in themselves. The old town below has the Old Bridge, a sandstone bridge with a medieval gate. The Hauptstraße is a long pedestrian street of shops and cafés and the Heiliggeistkirche stands at the market square. The university shapes the town. It has the Alte Aula, the University Museum and the Student Prison where rowdy students were once locked up. The Philosophers' Walk on the north bank of the river has panoramic views of the castle and the old town. In summer, castle illuminations with fireworks are held on a few evenings. The Christmas market in the old town opens in late November. Two days cover the castle, the old town and a walk on the hill. Speyer, with its UNESCO-listed cathedral, Mannheim and the Schwetzingen palace gardens are easy day trips by train.

- The HeidelbergCARD includes unlimited VRN buses, trams and local trains plus the castle and Bergbahn.
- Car parks fill up on Saturdays and the old town is hard to drive through.
- The Student Prison behind the Old University held rowdy students until 1914 and its cells are covered in graffiti.
How to travel to Heidelberg
Trains are the easiest way to reach Heidelberg. The fastest ICE from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof takes about 45 minutes, with around 60 connections a day. Mannheim is a short regional train ride away and the S-Bahn Rhein-Neckar lines connect the city with the region. Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof is a short tram or bus ride from the old town. Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is the closest large airport and takes about an hour by train. Stuttgart Airport (STR) is around an hour and a half away. Long-distance coaches also stop in Heidelberg. By car, the A5 and then the A656 lead into the city. The A6 passes to the south. Driving from Frankfurt takes about an hour but central streets are tricky, so park at the edge and walk.
Access summary
- From Frankfurt Airport (FRA): Direct/regional trains, usually 45–70 minutes.

- From Frankfurt city: Trains via Mannheim or direct, roughly 45–60 minutes.
Where to stay in Heidelberg
Most visitors stay in the old town or near the station. The old town has small hotels, guesthouses and hostels within walking distance of the castle and the Hauptstraße. Hotels near the station are often cheaper and have good tram connections. Bergheim and the Weststadt, just west of the center, are quieter residential areas with cafés and smaller hotels. Neuenheim and Handschuhsheim, across the Neckar, are calmer and greener. Hostels offer budget beds in the old town and the youth hostel is further out, near the university campus. Heidelberg is busy in summer, during the castle illuminations and at the Christmas market, so booking ahead helps. Rooms in the old town can be expensive so Mannheim, a short train ride away, is an option for a cheaper base.

How to get around Heidelberg
The old town is small and walkable and the Hauptstraße is a pedestrian zone. The castle sits above it on a hillside and the Neckar separates the old town from the Philosophers' Walk. Trams and buses cover the outer districts, the station and the Neuenheim side of the river.
Walking:
Most sights in the old town are within a few minutes of each other. The walk up to the castle is steep, so many visitors take the funicular up and walk down.
Trams and buses:
Trams and buses run by rnv cover the city and the Rhine-Neckar region and tickets follow the VRN network. Night buses run at weekends.
Bergbahn:
The funicular runs from the Kornmarkt to the castle and on to Molkenkur, with a historic railway continuing to the Königstuhl. It has its own fares unless you hold a HeidelbergCARD.
Bikes:
Bikes are allowed on trams and buses outside weekday peak hours. The flat Neckar valley is easy to ride and rental shops are in the center.
Car:
A car is a burden in the old town because of one-way streets and pedestrian zones. Use the signed car parks, which fill up on Saturdays.
Food in Heidelberg
Food in Heidelberg is Palatinate and Baden cooking, served alongside a wide range of student-friendly cafés and international restaurants. Many places in the old town are expensive, so outer districts and university canteens are cheaper. Bakeries, markets and supermarkets suit picnics along the Neckar.
Studentenkuss:
A chocolate filled with hazelnut praline and set on a wafer, created in Heidelberg. Chocolate shops in the old town sell it in boxes as a souvenir.
Saumagen:
A Palatinate specialty of pork stuffed in a stomach casing with potatoes and spices, sliced and fried and usually served with sauerkraut. It's heavy and filling.
Flammkuchen:
A thin, crisp flatbread with cream, onions and bacon, popular across the Rhine and Palatinate regions. It's easy to share with wine.
Wine:
Wine from the Palatinate and Baden is on many menus, especially Riesling. The Wine Village event in autumn shows regional wines.
