Gothic cathedral, Roman ruins and Kölsch

Cologne is Germany's fourth-largest city and began as a Roman colony on the Rhine, which still shows in the old town where a stretch of the Roman wall survives. The Gothic cathedral next to the central station took more than six centuries to finish. Around it are Romanesque churches, art museums and brewery taverns that serve the local Kölsch beer. Most of this is on the left bank within walking distance, so Cologne works well for a long weekend. Visitors can also use it as a base for Düsseldorf and Bonn, which are each within about 30 minutes by train.

Why travel to Cologne?

Cologne puts a Gothic cathedral, Romanesque churches, large art museums and a brewery-tavern culture into a center that's easy to cover on foot. The cathedral is the obvious start. Construction ran from 1248 to 1880 and the interior holds medieval stained glass and the gilded shrine of the Three Kings. The south tower has a viewing platform about 330 ft up, reached by 533 steps. Romanesque churches such as Great St. Martin on the riverfront and St. Gereon show how old the city is. The Wallraf-Richartz Museum covers painting from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, Museum Ludwig has a large pop art collection and the Chocolate Museum is on a peninsula in the Rhine harbor. The Rhine promenade and the Hohenzollern Bridge, which has a footpath and rows of love locks, are good places to look back at the cathedral. In two days you can see the cathedral, the old town and a museum or two and still spend an evening in a Brauhaus. With a third day, you can add a Rhine boat trip or a train ride to Düsseldorf or Bonn. Much of the old town was rebuilt after bombing in the Second World War, so it isn't a picture-book medieval center. What the city has instead is a lot within walking distance and a beer culture that's easy to join. The street carnival starts on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday and peaks with the Rose Monday parade, when the center is crowded and hotels fill early. In December, several Christmas markets open in the center, including one at the cathedral.

Knowledge before you go

  • Cathedral interior visits need a ticket, bookable online or at Roncalliplatz 2.
  • Suitcases and large bags aren't allowed in the cathedral or tower and can't be stored on site.
  • Cars need a green low-emission sticker to enter much of the center, including foreign-registered ones.
  • Kölsch glasses are refilled automatically until you put a coaster on top, so place it when you've had enough.

How to travel to Cologne

Trains are the easiest way to reach Cologne, with direct ICE services from Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Brussels and a central station right next to the cathedral. Düsseldorf is about 20 minutes away, Frankfurt Airport about an hour and Amsterdam about 2 hours 40 minutes. Direct ICE trains also run from Berlin, Hamburg and Munich, each taking five hours or less. Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) is about 9.5 mi southeast of the center. The S-Bahn lines S13 and S19 reach the central station in about 15 minutes. Düsseldorf Airport (DUS) has its own long-distance station with direct ICE trains to Cologne in about 30 minutes. By car, the A1, A3 and A4 form a motorway ring around Cologne and the A57 leads into the center. Driving takes about 45 minutes from Düsseldorf, about two hours from Frankfurt and about three hours from Amsterdam, depending on traffic.

Access summary

  • From Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN): S-Bahn or regional train, about 15–20 minutes.
  • From Düsseldorf: Frequent regional/IC trains to Köln Hbf, typically around 30–45 minutes.
  • From Frankfurt: Direct ICE high-speed trains to Köln Hbf, usually about 1–1.5 hours.

Where to stay in Cologne

Hotels in Cologne are concentrated in the old town and around the central station, which puts the cathedral, the riverfront and most museums within a short walk. Options run from international chains and mid-range business hotels to hostels and apartments. Altstadt-Süd, just south of the old town, has a lot of budget accommodation. The Belgian Quarter to the west is a good choice if you want cafes, bars and Art Nouveau streets close by. Deutz, across the Rhine, is quieter and has views of the skyline. It's also the closest area to the trade fair grounds and the Lanxess Arena. Hotels fill up and prices rise during the carnival days and big trade fairs, so book early for those dates. If Cologne is full or expensive for your dates, Düsseldorf is a short train ride away.

How to get around Cologne

The center of Cologne is compact and mostly flat, with the cathedral and the central station side by side and the old town and riverfront just south and east of them. Neumarkt is about 0.8 mi west of the cathedral and the right bank with Deutz is across the Hohenzollern Bridge. Visitors can cover the main sights on foot and add a tram or bus for longer hops.

Walking:
The cathedral, the old town, the riverfront and the shopping streets Hohe Straße and Schildergasse are all within a short walk of each other.
You can also cross the Hohenzollern Bridge on foot to Deutz, where the view back at the cathedral is a good reason to go.

Stadtbahn and buses:
The KVB runs the Stadtbahn, which goes underground in the center and above ground further out, as well as a dense bus network.
Tickets are sold at machines and in the KVB app, with fares set by the regional VRS system. The Stadtbahn doesn't go to Cologne Bonn Airport, which has its own S-Bahn link.

Bikes:
KVB-Rad is the city's bike-share system, with around 3,000 bikes that you rent by app after a free registration.
A flex zone in the center lets you leave a bike within it. The paths along the Rhine are flat and good for longer rides.

Car:
A car isn't needed for sightseeing.
Parking garages in the center usually fill by about 11:00 AM on Advent weekends. The park-and-ride lots at the edge of the city are the easier choice.

Food in Cologne

Eating in Cologne centers on the Brauhäuser, brewery taverns that serve hearty Rhenish dishes next to the local beer, along with thousands of other restaurants covering many cuisines. Traditional menus lean toward meat, though a few dishes such as Halve Hahn are vegetarian. In December, market stalls sell Rievkooche, fried potato fritters served with apple sauce.

Kölsch:
Kölsch is a pale, top-fermented beer protected as a regional specialty and brewed in Cologne.
It's served in tall, narrow glasses called Stangen. The waiters, known as Köbes, carry them on a round tray. It tastes best fresh from the barrel, which is how the Brauhäuser serve it.

Halve Hahn:
The name means half a chicken in dialect, but what arrives is a rye roll with a thick slice of Gouda, onions and mustard.
The joke on the menu goes back to the 19th century. It's a simple snack to have with a beer.

Himmel un Äd:
The name means heaven and earth.
It's mashed potatoes and apples, served with fried blood sausage or liver sausage and often topped with fried onions. The sweet and savory combination is typical of Rhenish cooking.

Sauerbraten:
Rhenish Sauerbraten is beef marinated in vinegar for several days.
The sauce is sweetened with raisins and honey cake. Potato dumplings and apple sauce come on the side.

Safety information overview

General safety
7
Cologne is generally safe, but petty theft is the main problem. Pickpockets work the central station, cathedral square, crowded trams and old town bars, especially during carnival. The station area and bar streets such as Zülpicher Straße need normal big-city caution after dark.
Health & Medical
9
Medical care in Cologne is of a high standard, with several large hospitals including the university clinic. Pharmacies run a rotating emergency service outside normal hours and 112 is the number for emergencies. Visitors from outside the EU should carry travel insurance.
Accessibility
8
The left-bank center is flat, but cobblestones and crowded pedestrian streets slow down wheelchairs and walkers. The cathedral interior and treasury are accessible, while the 533-step tower has no lift. Not every Stadtbahn stop is step-free, so check lifts on your route.
Tap water
9
Tap water in Cologne is safe to drink and the supplier tests it regularly. It's fairly hard and can leave limescale in kettles. Restaurants usually bring bottled water unless you ask for Leitungswasser, which not every place serves.
