Why travel to Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis?
The Rheingau is the main reason to visit. Its vineyards cover about 12 sq mi on south facing slopes beside the Rhine and Riesling takes up about three quarters of it, the highest share of any German wine region. Towns such as Rüdesheim, Eltville, Geisenheim and Johannisberg are known for estates, cellars and wine taverns. The late harvest style called Spätlese is said to have started at Schloss Johannisberg. Kloster Eberbach is the best known sight. This former Cistercian abbey is among the best preserved medieval monasteries in Germany and has been used as a film location. In Eltville the Rhine promenade is lined with rose plants that bloom in May and June and the castle tower has a small printing exhibition. Rüdesheim has the narrow Drosselgasse lane with wine taverns and a cable car up to the Niederwald monument with a view over the Rhine valley. The Taunus side adds forest walks and small towns such as Bad Schwalbach and Idstein. The Rheinsteig hiking trail follows the river above the vineyards. A day covers one or two wine towns and the abbey. Three days leave time for hiking, a boat trip and the Taunus. Late summer and autumn are the best seasons for wine.

Where to stay in Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis
Rüdesheim and Eltville are the main bases and have the most hotels, guesthouses and wine estates with rooms. Both have a train station and you can walk to the main sights. Rüdesheim is lively and busy while Eltville is calmer and has the rose promenade. Smaller wine villages such as Hattenheim, Oestrich-Winkel and Lorch offer quieter stays on wine estates. In the Taunus, Bad Schwalbach and Idstein have hotels and guesthouses and suit hikers. Late summer, the autumn harvest and wine festival weekends fill the district, so book ahead. Wiesbaden and Frankfurt have more rooms if the Rheingau is full. Winter and early spring are quieter and cheaper though some places close for the season.
