Why travel to Münsterland?
Münsterland is worth a visit for its calm, green landscape and its castles. The region is flat and sparsely populated, with fields, pastures and meadows that feel like a giant park. Baroque palaces, manor houses and moated estates stand in the countryside, many of them still surrounded by water. Nordkirchen is often called the Versailles of Westphalia. Burg Vischering and Burg Lüdinghausen are fortified moated castles close to each other. Schloss Hülshoff is the birthplace of the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. Anholt in Isselburg is a moated castle that goes back to the 12th century. Cycling is the main reason to come. More than 2,500 mi of routes are signposted and the 100 Castles and Palaces Route is about 850 mi long. The terrain is mostly flat to slightly hilly on paved paths, so you don't need to be fit. Münster is often called the unofficial cycling capital of Germany. Münster was founded in 805 and is the cultural center of the region. Its cathedral has an astronomical clock from the 16th century. Towns like Warendorf and Werne have historic centers and Beckum has a town hall that dates from 1441. Villages such as Billerbeck and Telgte are easy stops on a ride. A long weekend is enough for Münster and a few palaces by train, bus or bike. For a proper bike tour from castle to castle, plan three to five days.

Knowledge before you go
- Rent a bike in Münster before heading out to the castles.
- Some castles only open their grounds, not the interiors, so check visiting hours before you set out.
- Buses and trains thin out in the countryside, so check the timetable before a long day trip.
- Ask what is in the Töttchen before you order, since this local ragout is often made with offal or veal.
How to travel to Münsterland
Münster is the usual entry point to the region. Regional and long-distance trains reach Münster Hbf. From there local trains, buses and bikes lead into the countryside. Münster/Osnabrück Airport (FMO) is in Greven, about 16 mi north of Münster. The buses S50 and D50 link it with Münster Hbf and a single ticket costs €7.60 ($8.54). The airport has no train station of its own. Dortmund and Düsseldorf airports have more international flights and both are linked to Münster by train, usually within two hours. By car, the A1 runs north to south past the airport and through the region. Take exit 75 for the airport. Within the region, trains and buses are slower than a car, so cyclists often take the train to Münster and ride from there.
Access summary
- From Münster/Osnabrück Airport (FMO): Shuttle or train to Münster, about 30–40 minutes.
- From Dortmund: Direct regional trains to Münster, usually around 1–1.25 hours.
- From Cologne: Frequent ICE/IC and regional trains to Münster, about 1.5–2 hours.
Where to stay in Münsterland
Münster is the best base for first-time visitors. It has the most hotels, restaurants and train connections. Day trips by bike or train reach nearby castles. The old town and the area around the station are central and easy to walk. Smaller towns such as Coesfeld, Billerbeck, Warendorf and Lüdinghausen offer guesthouses, family-run hotels and holiday apartments in quieter settings. Some castles and estates in the region run hotels or restaurants. On a multi-day bike tour, plan overnight stops in towns along the route and book ahead from May to September. Münster fills up on weekends in summer and during trade events and university terms, so reserve early for those dates.
