Why travel to Bremen?
Bremen has a compact historic center where the main sights are a few minutes apart on foot. The Town Hall dates from 1405. The Roland statue in front of it dates from 1404 and is 33 ft tall. Both have held World Heritage status since 2004. Next to the Town Hall is the bronze statue of the Town Musicians from the Grimm fairy tale, a donkey, dog, cat and rooster standing on each other's backs. Böttcherstraße is a short brick street built in the 1920s and 1930s with money from the coffee merchant Ludwig Roselius. It has galleries and craft shops. The Schnoor quarter has small houses from the 15th and 16th centuries along narrow lanes. The Schlachte promenade on the Weser has beer gardens along the river. The Freimarkt is the big event of the year. The fair has been held since 1035 and draws more than a million visitors over about 17 days from mid-October. In December a Christmas market fills the Marktplatz. Bremerhaven is under an hour away by train and has the German Emigration Center and the Klimahaus museum. Two days cover the center of Bremen. A third day leaves room for Bremerhaven or the artists' village of Worpswede.

How to travel to Bremen
Trains are the easiest way to reach Bremen, with the Hauptbahnhof a short tram ride from the old town. ICE trains from Hamburg and Hannover take about an hour and regional trains connect Bremen with Bremerhaven, Oldenburg and Osnabrück. Bremen Airport (BRE) is about 2 mi south of the city center. Tram line 6 goes from the airport to the Hauptbahnhof in around 15 minutes. The airport has daily connections to hubs such as Munich, Istanbul, Amsterdam, Zurich and Vienna. Hamburg Airport (HAM) has many more routes. From there you take the S-Bahn to Hamburg Hbf and a train on to Bremen. By car, the A1 and the A27 pass the city. Driving from Hamburg takes roughly 1 hour 15 minutes and from Hannover about 1 hour 30 minutes. Plan on a park and ride site at the edge of town.
Access summary
- From Bremen Airport (BRE): Tram line 6 or taxi, about 10–20 min.
- From Hamburg: Direct trains to Bremen Hauptbahnhof, usually around 1–1.5 h.
- From Hanover: Frequent direct trains to Bremen, typically about 1–1.5 h.
Where to stay in Bremen
Most visitors stay in hotels in the Altstadt near the Marktplatz or around the Hauptbahnhof. Both areas are within walking distance of the main sights. Das Viertel, the district east of the old town, has guesthouses and a few small hotels close to bars and cafes. Apartments and hostels are also available in the city. Bremen is compact so the choice of area matters less than in a bigger city. Without a car, the hotels near the station or in the Altstadt are the most convenient. Rooms get scarcer during the Freimarkt in autumn and the Christmas market in December, so book ahead for those dates.

How to get around Bremen
Bremen is flat and compact, with the Hauptbahnhof about 0.6 mi from the Marktplatz. The main sights of the Altstadt (old town) are a short walk from each other. Trams and buses cover the rest of the city.
Trams and buses:
BSAG runs the trams and buses, with night lines on some routes. VBN coordinates tickets and timetables across the region and its FahrPlaner app helps with routes. The Deutschlandticket is valid on BSAG trams and buses and tram line 6 goes to the airport.
Bikes:
Cycling is popular in Bremen because the city is flat and has many bike lanes. The Weser Cycle Path goes along the river through the city.
Car:
You don't need a car in the city. Park and ride sites at the edge of town are the easier option if you arrive by car.
Regional trains:
Regional trains from the Hauptbahnhof go to Bremerhaven, Oldenburg and Osnabrück. The Deutschlandticket covers them but not ICE or IC trains.
Food in Bremen
Food in Bremen is northern German and hearty, with fish, potatoes, kale and sausages on many menus. Bremen has been a coffee trading city for generations. Vegetarian and vegan options are easy to find in the Viertel and around the center.
Kohl und Pinkel:
The classic is kale cooked with Pinkel, a smoked sausage made with groats and bacon. Potatoes come on the side and it's a fall and winter dish found on many menus.
Bremer Klaben:
This is a dense fruit bread with raisins and candied peel that's eaten around Christmas. Bakeries in the city sell it in the weeks before the holiday.
Coffee and beer:
Coffee roasting has a long tradition here. Beck's beer is brewed in the city and is common in beer gardens.
