Don't miss
- 🌸 Stroll through Mainau's blooming flower gardens
- 🚤 Take a scenic boat tour across Lake Constance
- 🍷 Sample local Riesling wine beside the lake
Mainau covers about 0.2 sq mi of Lake Constance shoreline and is gardened throughout. Something is in bloom from early spring to late fall. Spring starts with more than 150 varieties of flower bulbs, summer brings the roses of the Italian rose garden and late summer belongs to the dahlia garden. Around them grow palms and other trees from warmer regions, which do well here because of the mild lakeside climate.
The island has been shaped by several owners. The Teutonic Order owned it for centuries and built the baroque castle in the 18th century. In the 19th century the Grand Duke of Baden turned it into a summer residence and planted many of the exotic trees. The Bernadotte family has owned it since the 1930s. Today the castle holds an exhibition, a boutique and a cafe. A baroque church stands next to it.
Besides the beds and trees, you can visit the palm house and the butterfly house, which is open from late March to mid October. A farm area has a petting zoo where children can feed the goats with feed from a dispenser. Seasonal displays such as the dinosaur models and the maize maze for families change from year to year. The Garden for All has plants at hand height to touch and smell, with Braille boards.
Plan on three to five hours for a full visit. The island is open daily all year from 9:00 AM and closes between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM in the main season. You walk everywhere, since bikes aren't allowed and motor vehicles need permission. The park rules ask you to stay off flower beds and lawns and to keep out of the water, since bathing at the shore is banned.
Knowledge before you go
- Bikes aren't allowed on the island, so park them at the entrance.
- Picnics are only allowed at marked spots, while the lawns and flower beds are off limits.
- Dogs are allowed on a short leash but not in the castle or the Butterfly House.
- The island belongs to the Bernadotte family, relatives of the Swedish royal house, who have owned it since the 1930s.
