Why travel to Freiburg im Breisgau?
Freiburg is worth a visit for its old town and its position at the foot of the Black Forest. The Gothic Minster was built between about 1200 and 1513 and its tower can be climbed. A daily farmers' market fills the Münsterplatz around it. The Historical Merchants' Hall and the narrow lanes of the old town are close by. Small water channels called Bächle run along many streets. The outdoors starts at the edge of town. The Schlossberg hill has paths and a funicular. The Schauinsland cable car is 2 mi long and the longest in Germany. It reaches the 4,100 ft summit in about 20 minutes. Hiking, cycling and winter sports are all within reach. The city is known as an eco-city. The Vauban district is a model for sustainable living and the center has a large car-free zone. The city is also among the sunniest in Germany. The Baden wine region and the Kaiserstuhl hills are close and the Keidel thermal bath is a good place to relax. Day trips go to the Black Forest, the Kaiserstuhl and the Markgräflerland. France and Basel are about an hour away by train.
