Alpine town by Königssee and the Watzmann

Berchtesgaden is a small town in the Berchtesgadener Land, a corner of Bavaria that Austria borders on three sides. The Watzmann massif is just south of the town and Germany's only Alpine national park surrounds it. The Königssee, a long lake between steep rock walls, is a short bus ride away. Visitors can cross the lake on electric boats, ride the Jennerbahn cable car or tour one of Germany's oldest active salt mines. The Kehlsteinhaus and the documentation center on the Obersalzberg cover the area's Nazi-era history. Salzburg is about 16 mi away, so Berchtesgaden works as a base for two or three days of hiking and sightseeing.

Why travel to Berchtesgaden?

Berchtesgaden is a place for mountains and lake scenery within a few minutes of a town center. The Königssee is the best-known sight, with electric boats that cross a clear lake between steep rock walls. The echo off the cliffs is a highlight and the boats go on to St. Bartholomä, a pilgrimage church with red domes on the shore and the starting point for hikes into the national park. Higher up, the Jennerbahn cable car reaches a summit station at nearly 6,000 ft in a few minutes, with views of the Watzmann, the lake and the national park. Trails there range from easy panorama paths to demanding summit routes. The Kehlsteinhaus at 6,000 ft was built during the Nazi era as a representative building. You get up to it by a road cut into the rock and a gold-plated elevator through the mountain. Access is seasonal and a museum on the Obersalzberg explains the history behind it. Underground, the Salzbergwerk has operated for more than 500 years and guided tours include a mine train, wooden chutes and an underground salt lake. The town fits best into a stay of two or three days, with one day on the lake, one in the mountains and one for the mine or the town. Salzburg is close enough for a day trip. In winter the area has ski slopes and snowy walking trails.

Knowledge before you go

  • Check the tourist office's live crowd page before heading to Königssee.
  • The Guest Card gives free local buses and regional trains, but not the Kehlstein bus or the ALMErlebnisBUS.
  • A lake-to-summit ticket combines a boat trip to St. Bartholomä with a round trip on the Jennerbahn.
  • The Kehlsteinhaus road is closed to private cars, so you reach it by special bus from the Obersalzberg.

How to travel to Berchtesgaden

Trains are the easiest way to reach Berchtesgaden for most visitors, with a change in Freilassing or Salzburg on the way from Munich. The journey from Munich Hauptbahnhof takes about two and a half to three hours. From Salzburg, regional trains and RVO buses reach the town in around an hour. The closest airport is Salzburg (SZG), about 19 mi away, with onward links by bus or train via Salzburg Hauptbahnhof. Munich Airport (MUC) is the main alternative for longer routes and takes roughly three hours by train with a change in Munich. By car, Berchtesgaden is about two hours from Munich. Take the A8 to the Bad Reichenhall exit and then the B20 to Berchtesgaden. From Salzburg the drive takes about half an hour.

Access summary

  • From Salzburg Airport (SZG): Taxi or bus+train, usually 45–60 min.
  • From Salzburg city: Direct train or bus 840, roughly 45–60 min.
  • From Munich: Train via Freilassing or driving, generally about 2.5–3 h.

Where to stay in Berchtesgaden

Most visitors stay in the town of Berchtesgaden or in nearby villages like Schönau am Königssee, Ramsau and Bischofswiesen. Accommodation is mostly small hotels, guesthouses, farm stays and holiday apartments, with larger resort hotels in a few places. The town center is the most practical base without a car, since buses and the station are close. Schönau am Königssee is nearest to the lake and the boats. Ramsau is a forest and farmland valley with trailheads on the doorstep and suits you if you want the national park rather than a town. Guests normally receive the Berchtesgaden Guest Card from their host, which covers local buses and regional trains. Rooms fill up in July and August and in the winter holidays, so booking ahead helps. Salzburg and Bad Reichenhall are options for a base with more choice.

How to get around Berchtesgaden

The town center is small and easy to walk, but the main sights are spread across the surrounding valleys. Buses cover most of them while a car is useful mainly for the more remote trailheads.

Buses:
The Regionalverkehr Oberbayern (RVO) buses connect the town with Königssee, Ramsau, Bischofswiesen and the Jenner valley station.
The Kehlstein line and the ALMErlebnisBUS carry a toll and aren't part of the normal network. The Deutschlandticket is valid on regional buses with the same exceptions.

Trains:
Regional trains stop at Berchtesgaden Hauptbahnhof and at Bischofswiesen, Piding and Teisendorf.
The line goes on to Bad Reichenhall and Salzburg, so a day trip to Salzburg works without a car.

On-demand minibuses:
WatzMobil minibuses run without a fixed timetable in three areas (north, central and south).
They help for villages and trailheads that the regular buses reach rarely.

Car:
A car gives the most freedom but parking at Königssee and the cable car stations fills up on summer days.
The Parkster app works for paid parking in town.

Food in Berchtesgaden

Food in Berchtesgaden is Bavarian and Alpine, with hearty dishes served in inns, mountain huts and lakeside restaurants. Bakeries and supermarkets in town make picnics easy. Many huts and restaurants have a few vegetarian dishes, but menus lean toward meat and dairy.

Brotzeit:
A plate of bread with cheese, cold cuts and pickles, a standard snack at huts and in beer gardens.
It's easy to share and good after a hike.

Lake fish:
Char and other fish from the Königssee are served smoked or grilled near the lake, including at St.
Bartholomä, where the boat stops.

Kaiserschmarrn:
A torn, caramelized pancake with raisins and plum compote or apple sauce.
It's the classic dessert at mountain huts and often big enough for two.

Enzian:
A schnapps made from gentian roots, produced in the Berchtesgadener Land and served as a digestif after a meal.
Shops in town sell it as a souvenir.

Safety information overview

General safety
9
Berchtesgaden is very safe, with little street crime. The main risks are in the mountains, where weather changes fast, thunderstorms are common in summer and snow stays late. Check forecasts before higher routes and tell someone your plans before long hikes.
Health & Medical
7
Medical care is good, with doctors and pharmacies in town and larger hospitals in Bad Reichenhall and Salzburg. Ticks in forests and meadows can carry tick-borne encephalitis in parts of Bavaria, so cover up on hikes. The emergency number is 112.
Accessibility
4
The town center is small but sloped, with some cobblestones. Buses and trains reach most sights and the Jennerbahn gives access to high viewpoints without hiking. Trails in the national park are steep and rocky, so paved valley paths suit wheelchair users better.
Tap water
10
Tap water in Berchtesgaden is safe to drink. Streams and lakes in the national park aren't treated, so fill a bottle at your accommodation before hikes. Many mountain huts sell drinks and meals along the main routes, which helps on longer days.
