Best destinations to visit in June
Long daylight northern trails and refreshing alpine lake circuits in June
June marks the real start of summer across most of the Northern Hemisphere, right as the Southern Hemisphere settles into winter.
School summer holidays begin in many countries this month, making June one of the busiest stretches of the year for family travel. Warm, sunny days spread across Europe and much of North America, without quite reaching the peak heat and crowds of July and August. The Southern Hemisphere heads the other way, with ski season getting underway in parts of Australia, New Zealand and South America. Atlantic hurricane season also officially begins in June, worth keeping in mind for Caribbean and Gulf Coast trips later in the summer. Wildlife migrations also pick up pace in parts of Africa this month, adding another reason to plan a trip now.

Kamakura
Great Buddha, Zen temples and surf beaches
The bronze Great Buddha of Kamakura, about 13 meters tall, was cast around 1252. Hydrangeas bloom in shades of blue and pink along the path to Hase-dera temple each June. Small Enoden trains rattle along the coast past beaches and seaside homes. Rainy season brings frequent showers, but flowers thrive in the damp weather.

Clear river valley beneath the Hotaka Range
Kamikochi's valley sits at about 1,500 meters beneath the jagged peaks of the Northern Alps. Kappabashi Bridge crosses the clear Azusa River at the heart of the valley. The area opens to visitors each year in late April after winter closure. June brings green forests and wildflowers before the summer trekking crowds peak.
