Best cherry blossom destinations in Africa
Cultivated botanical garden rows and rare spring blossom lanes in Africa
Cherry blossoms are a rarity across Africa, limited to a small handful of regions in South Africa, Algeria and Morocco rather than any continent wide tradition. Jacaranda trees are the far more common source of spring color here, especially in South Africa, where entire streets turn purple each year.
In South Africa, the Johannesburg Botanical Garden has flowering cherries around its Rose Garden, blooming from early September into October, and Ficksburg in the Eastern Free State grows cherry orchards that bloom around the same time. Morocco's cherry blossoms appear each spring around Sefrou and Ain Leuh in the Middle Atlas Mountains near Fez. Algeria has flowering cherry trees too, both at the Jardin d'Essai du Hamma in Algiers and in highland orchards around Tlemcen, Souk Ahras, Medea and Blida, generally blooming between late March and mid April.
Checking with a specific garden or orchard before visiting matters here, since flowering is far less predictable and far less publicized than in countries with an established blossom season. These plantings remain a niche find rather than a planned attraction.
