Alpine lake shared by three countries

Lake Constance, called Bodensee in German, is shared by Germany, Switzerland and Austria and stretches 39 mi at its longest point. Its shore has old towns such as Konstanz, Lindau and Meersburg, with vineyards and orchards behind them and the Alps in view on clear days. Ferries link many towns from April to October. The flower island of Mainau and the UNESCO sites on Reichenau and at Unteruhldingen are easy to add. A cycle path goes all the way around the lake, so the area suits several slow days rather than a single stop.

Why travel to Bodensee?

Lake Constance is a region of small towns joined by water, so the appeal is the combination. Konstanz is the largest town and has a harbor, an old town and a statue of Imperia at the harbor entrance. Meersburg has a castle above the water and a wine town below it. Lindau's old town is on an island in the harbor and has a lighthouse. Bregenz has the Pfänder cable car and a summer festival with a stage that floats on the lake. Friedrichshafen is the place to learn about Zeppelin airships. Two UNESCO World Heritage sites are on the lake. One is the monastery island of Reichenau with its early medieval churches. At Unteruhldingen, reconstructed pile dwellings show how people lived on the shore in prehistoric times. The flower island of Mainau has its own page and is an easy addition from Konstanz. In summer you can swim from lake beaches, take boat trips and cycle on mostly flat paths. In September and October restaurants on the western shore hold fish weeks. Christmas markets run from November. Plan on three to five days to see the main towns. A week lets you cross into all three countries. Outside July and August the lake is quieter and cheaper.

Knowledge before you go

  • The Swiss side uses francs, while Germany and Austria use euros.
  • Car ferries from Konstanz to Meersburg run all year and save a long detour by road.
  • Bikes go on lake ships for an extra fee, but the small Untersee boats have little room.
  • The Bregenz Festival stages operas on a floating stage in the lake in July and August so tickets sell out early.

How to travel to Bodensee

Trains are the easiest way to reach Lake Constance. Direct services link Karlsruhe, Munich, Stuttgart, Zurich and Innsbruck with towns on the lake. Long-distance coaches serve Konstanz, Friedrichshafen, Lindau, Bregenz and St. Gallen. Five airports serve the region, starting with Friedrichshafen (FDH) on the lake, which has regional and seasonal flights. Zurich (ZRH), Munich (MUC), Stuttgart (STR) and Memmingen (FMM) have far more connections and are reached by train or car. Zurich is the closest of the large airports for the western and southern shore. Munich is the better choice for Lindau and Bregenz. By car, the A81 from Stuttgart leads toward Konstanz and the A96 from Munich goes to Lindau. The car ferry between Konstanz and Meersburg can save a long drive around the lake.

Access summary

  • From Friedrichshafen Airport (FDH): Bus to Lindau (30 min); train to Bregenz (45 min).
  • From Munich Airport (MUC): Train to Lindau (3 h); bus to Konstanz (4.5 h).
  • By ferry from Lindau to Bregenz: 1 hour; cycle routes along lake shore popular.

Where to stay in Bodensee

Most visitors stay in one of the larger shore towns and take trips from there. Konstanz has the widest choice of hotels and apartments, with the harbor and old town close together and good rail and ferry links. Lindau and Meersburg are smaller and more scenic, so they fill up faster and cost more in summer. Friedrichshafen and Bregenz have more business hotels and are good bases for Zeppelin sights and the festival. Guesthouses, farm stays and campsites are common along the shore, especially in the quieter villages. The Swiss side tends to be more expensive than the German and Austrian shores. Guests who stay more than one night in Konstanz get the Lake Constance Guest Pass with free local bus travel. Book well ahead for July and August and for festival dates.

How to get around Bodensee

The lake is long and narrow in places, up to roughly 8.5 mi wide, so the towns are strung out around it and it helps to pick a base and take day trips. Ships, trains and buses connect the shore, so you don't need a car for the main towns.

Boats:
Ships connect the lakeside towns from April to October and a catamaran runs every hour between Konstanz and Friedrichshafen.
Car ferries cross from Konstanz to Meersburg and from Friedrichshafen to Romanshorn. Scenic cruises also run in autumn and winter.

Trains and buses:
Regional trains and buses run along much of the shore in all three countries.
The Bodensee Ticket covers buses, trains and ferries across Germany, Switzerland and Austria for one or three days. Bikes aren't allowed on buses with this ticket.

Bikes:
The Lake Constance Cycle Path goes around the lake and is about 160 mi long.
Many towns rent bikes and e-bikes. Bikes go on trains and ships for an extra fee when there's space.

Car:
A car helps for villages away from the main shore towns and for the hills behind the lake.
Parking in old towns like Meersburg and Lindau is limited in summer, so park at the edge and walk.

Food in Bodensee

Food around the lake is a mix of Swabian, Swiss and Austrian cooking, with fish from the lake, local wine and fruit from the orchards behind the shore. Restaurants near the water usually have a lake fish dish on the menu. Vegetarian options are easy to find in the larger towns. Supermarkets and bakeries make self-catering easy.

Lake fish:
Felchen (whitefish) and perch from the lake are served pan-fried with potatoes.
Many restaurants on the western shore add special fish menus during the fish weeks in September and October.

Wine and fruit:
The lake has its own wine area, with Müller-Thurgau and Pinot Noir grown on the slopes near Meersburg and Hagnau.
Apples, pears and cherries are also made into juices and fruit brandies.

Cheese noodles:
Käsespätzle (egg noodles with melted cheese and onions) are common on the eastern shore and toward the Allgäu.
In Austria the same idea is called Käsknöpfle.

Safety information overview

General safety
9
Lake Constance is very safe for visitors, with low crime and well-marked paths. Pickpocketing is rare and limited to crowded summer events. The main risk is the water, because storms can arrive quickly and the lake stays cold into early summer.
Health & Medical
9
Medical care is excellent in all three countries, with hospitals in Konstanz, Friedrichshafen, Lindau, Bregenz and other towns and pharmacies marked Apotheke in every town. Ticks live in the woods and meadows around the lake and parts of the region are tick-borne encephalitis risk areas.
Accessibility
7
The shore promenades and cycle paths are mostly flat and step-free. Most trains and many ships have level boarding. Old towns have cobblestones and upper Meersburg is steep with stairs between its two levels. Lindau's island is flat but cobbled.
Tap water
10
Tap water is safe to drink throughout the Lake Constance region in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The lake itself is an important source of drinking water for the region. Fountains in many old towns are fine for refilling a bottle unless a sign says otherwise.
