Why travel to Tonga?
Tonga suits people who want wildlife, quiet islands and a culture they can see in daily life. The big draw is swimming with humpback whales, which breed in Tongan waters from July to October. Vava'u is the center of whale tourism, with a harbor town and many sheltered islands to sail between. Ha'apai and 'Eua have fewer visitors. Diving, snorkeling and kitesurfing are also on offer, with reefs and clear water around most of the groups. On Tongatapu you can visit the Ha'amonga 'a Maui trilithon, a large stone gateway thought to date from around the 13th century. The Mapu'a 'a Vaea blowholes on the south coast send spray high into the air when waves hit the reef. In Nuku'alofa you can see the Royal Palace from outside. The Talamahu Market is where locals sell produce and handicrafts. On 'Eua you can hike through forest to coastal cliffs. Ha'apai is quiet and unhurried. The cultural side is part of the trip. Church is central, so you can go to a Sunday service to hear the hymn singing. Resorts and villages hold feasts with dance and food from the earth oven. Plan for a week with two island groups. Flights and ferries take time, so a quick beach holiday doesn't suit Tonga well.

Knowledge before you go
- Most things close on Sunday, so stock up and plan around it.
- Swimming with whales is legal only on a licensed boat with a certified guide and fines are heavy.
- Visitors need a Tongan visitor driver's license from the Ministry of Transport in Nuku'alofa before driving.
- Swimwear is fine on beaches but may draw negative attention in villages, so carry a wrap or shorts.
How to travel to Tonga
Most visitors arrive by air at Fua'amotu International Airport (TBU) on Tongatapu, about 30 minutes by road from Nuku'alofa. Fiji Airways, Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia fly to Tonga, with regular connections from Fiji, Australia and New Zealand. Flights from Auckland take about three hours. From Europe or North America you usually connect in Auckland or via Samoa or Fiji. Vava'u also has a certified international airport at Lupepau'u. Taxis and hire cars are the options from the airport. No regular passenger ferries run from other countries, but cruise ships and yachts call at Nuku'alofa and Neiafu. Most visitors get a free visa on arrival valid for 30 days. Your passport needs to be valid for at least six months. Border officials can ask for an onward ticket, proof of funds and confirmed accommodation. Customs rules on plant and food products are strict.

Where to stay in Tonga
Accommodation in Tonga is mostly small-scale, from guesthouses and backpacker lodges to hotels, holiday homes and a few island resorts. There are no large resort complexes, so the setting and the staff often make the stay. In Nuku'alofa you'll find hotels and guesthouses that work well as a base for Tongatapu's sights and for flights and ferries. Beach stays on Tongatapu are quieter and more spread out along the coast. In Vava'u, the harbor town of Neiafu has guesthouses and hotels. Island resorts and sailing charters reach the sheltered bays. Ha'apai and 'Eua have small guesthouses and a few beach stays with simpler facilities. Vava'u fills up during the whale season from July to October, so book early for those months. Many places are small and family-run, so check what's included, especially meals and boat transfers. Resorts on the islands are generally not affected by the Sunday restrictions that apply elsewhere.

How to get around Tonga
Tongatapu has mostly paved roads and short distances between Nuku'alofa and the main sights. Other island groups are separated by open sea, so you'll use ferries or small planes between them.
Taxis:
Taxis aren't metered, so agree the fare before you set off. They can be unmarked, so look for a T at the start of the number plate. A taxi with a driver for the day is a simple way to cover Tongatapu's sights.
Car:
Traffic keeps to the left. Main roads are generally good, but inland roads can be narrow and potholed. Night driving is risky because of poor lighting and animals on the road. Speeding is fined on the spot.
Ferries:
Local ferries sail from Faua Wharf in Nuku'alofa to Ha'apai and Vava'u. Timetables change with demand and weather. Older vessels may be overloaded, so keep your schedule flexible.
Flights:
Small planes link the main islands, with flights from Tongatapu to Vava'u, Ha'apai and 'Eua run by the domestic airline. They're quicker than the ferries and suit a short trip.
Food in Tonga
Tongan cooking is built around root crops like taro and yam, coconut and seafood, with pork for feasts. Much of the food is home-cooked, so the best meals are often in villages and at feasts organized by resorts. Nuku'alofa and Neiafu have cafés and restaurants with international food. Sunday is a day of rest, so most shops and many cafés close. Buy what you need on Saturday if you're self-catering.
'Umu:
Food cooked in an earth oven with hot stones, often pork, fish and root crops wrapped in leaves. It's the standard way to prepare a Sunday meal or a feast. Some resorts offer it as a feast night.
Lu pulu:
Taro leaves filled with coconut cream and meat or fish, wrapped and baked. It's a common feast dish and has a soft, rich taste.
'Ota ika:
Raw fish marinated in lime juice and mixed with coconut cream, onion and tomato. It's usually served cold as a starter or light lunch.
Root crops:
Yams, sweet potato, taro and cassava come with most meals as the staple starch. They're boiled, baked in the 'umu or fried and usually served with fish or meat.
