Skyscrapers and historic colonial masonry in North America
North America's architectural story is compressed into a relatively short documented history but covers an extraordinary range, from the pre-Columbian ceremonial structures of the southwest and Mesoamerica to the invention of the modern skyscraper and some of the most influential domestic and civic architecture of the twentieth century. The continent's cities developed fast and under competing influences, producing urban cores where multiple decades of ambition are visible in close proximity.
The major eastern and midwestern cities contain the densest concentrations of significant twentieth century architecture, with several functioning as open-air museums of modernism supported by well-developed tour infrastructure and active preservation communities. The west coast produced its own distinct traditions in residential and civic design, and mid-century domestic architecture in particular draws dedicated visitors to specific neighbourhoods and regions.
Public access to interiors varies considerably and the most significant buildings often require advance booking or guided visits to see properly. Several cities run strong open house programmes that unlock otherwise inaccessible buildings for a weekend each year and are worth planning around. Distances between major architectural destinations are large and flying between cities is standard, though individual urban cores are walkable and reward time spent without a fixed itinerary.
