Best romantic destinations in Europe

Historic honeymoon spots and quiet countryside retreats in Europe

Europe has no shortage of romantic settings, and the continent's relatively compact geography means that extraordinary destinations are often within a few hours of each other. Medieval hilltop towns, candlelit harbour cities, Alpine lake villages and sun-drenched island coastlines all sit within easy reach, and the density of history, food culture and natural beauty makes it one of the most naturally suited regions in the world for couple's travel.

Accommodation options are strong across the continent, from converted historic properties and vineyard estates to small family-run hotels with a character that larger properties rarely match. Dining well is rarely difficult, and the combination of good food, good wine and a beautiful setting does a lot of the work on its own.

The main practical consideration is timing. Much of Europe is significantly overcrowded in July and August, and the most romantic destinations are often the most affected. Spring and autumn tend to offer the best balance of good weather, manageable crowds and a more authentic atmosphere. A little planning around timing can make an enormous difference to the overall experience.

City in Germany
Heidelberg
Castle ruin above the Neckar and old town
Heidelberg Castle's ruins overlook the Neckar River from a hillside above the old town. Couples can cross the Old Bridge on foot, pausing at Philosophers' Walk for valley views. Cobblestone streets in the historic center wind past cafes and old university buildings. Vineyards on the surrounding hillsides offer tastings within a short walk of town.
Town in Germany
Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Half-timbered streets and a walkable town wall
Medieval walls encircle Rothenburg's storybook old town, its half-timbered houses seemingly frozen in time. Couples can walk the town wall at dusk, looking down over red-tiled rooftops. The Night Watchman's tour leads visitors through cobblestone lanes lit only by lantern. Christmas shops here sell ornaments year-round, keeping a festive spirit alive through every season.
