Best historical destinations in South America
Pre-Columbian citadel ruins and colonial towns in South America
South America's history is as layered as its landscapes, stretching from some of the most sophisticated pre-Columbian civilisations on earth through the upheaval of European colonisation and on to independence movements, political turbulence and cultural reinvention that continue to shape the continent today. The physical evidence of that history survives in extraordinary variety, from ancient ceremonial sites at altitude to colonial city centres that have remained largely intact for centuries.
The range of historical experience on offer is broad. Ancient ceremonial complexes, Inca road networks, Spanish and Portuguese colonial architecture, Jesuit mission ruins and the landscapes of more recent political history all exist within a continent where past and present sit in unusually close proximity. Some sites are among the most visited in the world. Others of equal significance receive far less attention than they deserve.
Understanding the colonial context is particularly important in South America, where the relationship between indigenous heritage and European influence shapes almost every significant historical site on the continent. Arriving with some background knowledge and choosing guides who engage seriously with the complexity of that history tends to produce a substantially richer and more honest experience.
