Indigenous heritage sites and historic maritime settlements in Oceania
Oceania's history encompasses tens of thousands of years of indigenous settlement, navigation and cultural development before European arrival transformed the region irrevocably. The physical evidence of that pre-contact history survives in forms that require genuine engagement and context to appreciate, alongside the more visible remains of the colonial period that followed.
The range of historical experience is broader than the region's reputation suggests. Ancient indigenous rock art, ceremonial landscapes, colonial settlement remains and the landscapes of the second world war's Pacific theatre all exist within a region where history is often more layered and contested than first appearances suggest.
Context and sensitivity matter more here than in most historical regions. Many of Oceania's most significant sites are sacred to indigenous communities and visiting them responsibly requires awareness of local protocols. Choosing guides with deep community connections and arriving with an openness to perspectives that differ from conventional narratives tends to produce the most meaningful experience.
