Best beer destinations in Asia

Emerging craft beer capitals and taprooms across Asia

Asia's beer culture spans an enormous range, from the deeply embedded drinking traditions of East Asia and the rapidly evolving craft scenes of its major cities to the more restrictive environments of countries where alcohol occupies a complicated cultural and legal position. Mass-market lagers with strong local identities remain dominant across most of the continent, but a craft brewing movement has taken root in the more internationally connected urban centres and produced scenes of genuine quality.

Japan and a handful of other East Asian markets have the most developed independent brewing infrastructure, with taprooms, specialist bars and beer-focused events supporting multi-stop itineraries in the strongest cities. Southeast Asia's craft scene has grown quickly, with certain cities accumulating enough quality producers to reward dedicated exploration beyond the mass-market options that dominate most venues.

Alcohol restrictions vary significantly by country and in some areas affect availability considerably, making advance research essential before planning a beer-focused itinerary. Heat and humidity across much of the region make cold lager the default for good practical reasons and engaging with local drinking culture on its own terms is as rewarding as seeking out craft alternatives.

Osaka
Castle, neon canals and street food
Asahi's roots trace back to a brewery founded in Osaka in 1889. The company later launched Asahi Super Dry, Japan's first widely popular dry style lager. Visitors can tour a modern Asahi brewery just outside the city. Local izakayas across Osaka still pour the brand ice cold with grilled skewers.

Sapporo
Snow festival city with ramen and beer
Sapporo Beer traces its roots to a brewery founded in the city in 1876. The Sapporo Beer Museum now occupies the original red brick building. Visitors can sample fresh drafts inside the museum's beer hall afterward. The Sapporo Snow Festival fills nearby parks with ice sculptures each February.

Tokyo
Japan's capital of temples, towers and food
Yebisu Beer takes its name from the Tokyo district where its original brewery once stood. A small museum near Ebisu Station now traces the brand's history back to 1890. Visitors can sample seasonal drafts in the museum's tasting lounge afterward. The surrounding district still carries the beer's name on its train station.
