Pearl-diving heritage, forts and Gulf souqs

Bahrain is an archipelago of more than 30 islands in the Persian Gulf, with about 1.5 million people and most of them on the main island. It has three UNESCO sites, including Qal'at al-Bahrain, a fort site with about 4,000 years of occupation. Visitors can also walk through Manama's souq, follow the Pearling Path through old Muharraq or watch the Formula 1 race at the Bahrain International Circuit. Beach resorts and malls are in the north. Most sights are within about 30 minutes of Manama by road, so it suits a short break or a stopover between other Gulf cities.

Why travel to Bahrain?

Bahrain has a lot of history for such a small island. Three sites are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Qal'at al-Bahrain was the harbor and capital of the ancient Dilmun civilization and has a fort on top. The Pearling Path in Muharraq links merchants' houses and shops from the days when natural pearls drove the economy. The Dilmun Burial Mounds are large fields of ancient graves scattered across the island. The National Museum and the Al Fateh Grand Mosque are other major stops. The Tree of Life is a lone mesquite tree growing in the desert. Bahrain also works as a modern Gulf city break. Manama has a traditional souq near Bab Al Bahrain, glass towers along the waterfront and a cafe and restaurant scene in the Adliya district. The circuit at Sakhir hosts the Formula 1 race and has track experiences on other dates. Beach clubs, diving and horse riding are available and shopping malls are large and air-conditioned. Two or three days cover the main sights. It pairs easily with a trip to Saudi Arabia over the King Fahd Causeway or with other Gulf cities by air. The cooler months from about November to March are the most comfortable and summers are very hot, so outdoor sightseeing is best in the early morning.

Knowledge before you go

  • Check your passport has six months' validity before you book flights.
  • Carry photo ID such as your passport at all times, as it's a legal requirement in Bahrain.
  • The weekend is Friday and Saturday so many shops open only after midday prayers on Fridays.
  • Walk the Pearling Path in Muharraq in the cooler hours because summer afternoons are extremely hot.

How to travel to Bahrain

Most visitors arrive by air at Bahrain International Airport (BAH) on Muharraq island, a short drive from Manama. Gulf Air is the national carrier and the airport has flights from Gulf hubs, South Asia, Europe, Egypt and other destinations. Taxis wait in Car Park B and app-based taxis pick up outside Gate 1. Public buses serve the Arrivals area around the clock and car rental desks are in the arrivals hall. By road, the King Fahd Causeway, about 16 mi long, links Bahrain with Saudi Arabia near Khobar and Dammam. It's a common weekend route for visitors from the Eastern Province. The crossing can take from under an hour to several hours depending on the day and checks. It has been closed at short notice during periods of regional tension. Many nationalities can get a visa online or on arrival with a passport valid for at least six months. Check the official eVisa rules for your nationality before you book.

Access summary

  • Manama: Fly into Bahrain International Airport (BAH) from major Middle East hubs.
  • From Saudi Arabia: Drive or bus via King Fahd Causeway into Bahrain.
  • Gulf Air hub at BAH; independent carrier, not in major alliances.

Where to stay in Bahrain

Most visitors stay in Manama or one of the nearby districts, which keeps the sights, the airport and the circuit all within a short drive. The central area around the Diplomatic Area and Seef has large hotels, malls and waterfront views. Adliya is a quieter neighborhood with boutique hotels, cafes and restaurants. Juffair has many apartment hotels. Muharraq is near the airport and the Pearling Path and has smaller guesthouses in traditional houses. Beach resorts are on the north and east coast and on islands such as Amwaj and Reef. Staying near the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir makes sense for race weekends. Prices are moderate by Gulf standards but climb and hotels fill during the Formula 1 weekend and in the cooler months, so book early for those dates. Hotels serve alcohol in licensed bars and restaurants while many other venues don't.

How to get around Bahrain

Bahrain is small and its islands are linked by bridges and causeways. The airport is on Muharraq island. Most day trips from Manama take under half an hour by car.

Car:
A car is the easiest way to see everything.
Major international rental companies have desks at the airport and at large hotels. Roads are good and signs are in English and Arabic. You drive on the right.

Taxis:
Taxis are plentiful and you can hail one on the street or find them at stands outside hotels and big attractions.
App-based taxis work in the main areas. Agree on a fare in advance if the taxi has no meter.

Buses:
A public bus network connects the airport, Manama and other towns.
Routes are limited and schedules vary, so buses suit budget travelers with time more than people on a short stay.

Walking:
Manama is walkable in parts such as the souq and the Bab Al Bahrain area, though pavements are patchy and summer heat makes long walks hard.

Food in Bahrain

Bahraini cooking shares its roots with Gulf Arab cuisine and uses a lot of spiced rice, fish and dates. Fresh Gulf seafood is on many menus, with local fish such as hamour grilled or baked. Cafes and street stalls sell samboosa, shawarma and karak tea. Arabic coffee and dates are offered as a welcome gesture.

Rice dishes:
Machboos is a rice dish cooked with spices and meat or fish and is a staple of Gulf cooking.
Muhammar is a sweet rice served with fish.

Breakfast and sweets:
Balaleet is sweet vermicelli with an egg on top and is a common breakfast.
Bahraini halwa is a sticky sweet often served with coffee and cardamom.

Because of its large expatriate population Bahrain also has Lebanese, Indian, Filipino and international restaurants in every price range. Alcohol is served in hotels and licensed venues. Opening hours change during Ramadan, when many places close during the day.

Safety information overview

General safety
7
Bahrain has low everyday crime and is generally safe, but regional tensions can disrupt flights and the King Fahd Causeway at short notice. Follow your government's advice, keep plans flexible and avoid protests and military sites. Laws on drugs, dress and social media are strict.
Health & Medical
8
Bahrain has well-equipped public and private hospitals in Manama and other towns and pharmacies are well stocked. Summer heat brings a risk of heat exhaustion and dehydration. Tetanus and hepatitis A vaccines are usually advised and travel insurance is sensible.
Accessibility
6
Accessibility is mixed. Many malls and hotels are step-free and roads suit taxis and rental cars. Pavements are limited and the souq and old Muharraq have narrow uneven lanes. Summer heat limits time outdoors so plan sightseeing for mornings or evenings.
Tap water
5
Tap water in hotels and public facilities is considered safe to drink by the health ministry. Much of it comes from desalination plants. Many people still choose bottled water for its taste and it's sold everywhere.
