Why travel to Maputo?
Maputo has Portuguese-era architecture, busy African markets, a good seafood scene and an active arts community, all in a compact center on Maputo Bay. It works well as a stay of two or three days or as the start of a trip to the beaches and reserves of southern Mozambique. The Central Railway Station is an early 1900s Beaux-Arts building with a copper dome and it's still in use. The Fortaleza de Maputo was built by the Portuguese in the 18th and 19th centuries and has a museum on local history. The Casa de Ferro is the Iron House, a steel house linked to the office of Gustave Eiffel. The National Art Museum shows works by Malangatana. The Museum of Natural History has stuffed animals and artifacts. Mercado Central is more than a century old and sells fresh fish, produce and spices. The FEIMA craft market in Parque dos Continuadores sells fabrics, carvings and batik and bargaining is expected. At the Mercado do Peixe you pick fresh seafood and have it cooked at nearby restaurants. Catembe, across the bay, has beaches and is reached by ferry. Inhaca Island has snorkeling and a lighthouse walk. The beaches at Costa do Sol are better for sunsets than for swimming. Two days covers the center and a third adds Catembe or Inhaca Island.
Knowledge before you go
- Use Yango or inDrive instead of street taxis at night.
- If police ask for money at a checkpoint, ask for a written fine to pay at the station.
- Check ferry times for Inhaca Island at the terminal, since departures are limited and weather can cancel them.
- Mercado Central is busiest in the morning, so go early for the freshest fish and produce.
How to travel to Maputo
Maputo International Airport (MPM) is about 2 mi northwest of the center. Taxis wait at the terminal and many hotels run shuttles. LAM Mozambique Airlines flies to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Nairobi. TAP Air Portugal flies direct from Lisbon. Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines connect through Doha, Istanbul and Addis Ababa. From South Africa the main crossing is Lebombo, called Ressano Garcia on the Mozambican side, about 60 mi west of Maputo. Queues can be long, especially during holidays. Armed robberies have occurred in queues near Lebombo after dark. Namaacha is the crossing from Eswatini. Intercape coaches also link Maputo with major South African cities. Rules depend on nationality, so check before booking. British passport holders, for example, apply through the official eVisa portal at least five working days ahead and pay about $47 ($47) for stays up to 30 days. Passports must be valid for six months and have two blank pages.
Access summary
- From Maputo International Airport (MPM): Taxi 25–35 min; local bus 45 min.
- From Johannesburg (JNB): Flight 3h 15m; from Cape Town (CPT): flight 4h 30m.
- By cruise ship: 2–3 hours from Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
Where to stay in Maputo
Accommodation is spread across three main areas. The Baixa, the downtown core, puts you within walking distance of the railway station, the Fortaleza and Mercado Central. Polana is more upscale and has boutiques, restaurants and quieter streets. Costa do Sol is a seafront area with beaches, bars and seafood restaurants, which suits a beach-focused stay. Options include hotels, guesthouses and apartments, with prices that tend to be mid-range to high for the region. Because walking after dark isn't advised, choose a place close to restaurants or where taxis and ride-hailing arrive easily. Catembe, across the bay, has a small number of places to stay and works as a quieter base, although it takes a ferry or a bridge crossing to reach the center. Flights and rooms get more expensive from June to August and around December and January.

How to get around Maputo
The Baixa, the downtown core, has the railway station, the Fortaleza and Mercado Central within walking distance of each other in daylight. Polana and Costa do Sol are farther out and are better reached by taxi or ride-hailing.
Ride-hailing and taxis:
Yango and inDrive work in Maputo and are generally seen as the safest and simplest option. Taxis are also available. Use a metered taxi or agree the fare before you start.
Chapas and txopelas:
Chapas are cheap minibuses that cover the whole city but are often overloaded. Txopelas are three-wheeled tuk-tuks. Official safety advice recommends trusted taxis or ride-hailing instead of both.
Ferries:
Ferries run daily to Catembe and to Inhaca Island. A suspension bridge also links Maputo and Catembe.
Car:
Driving is on the left. A car isn't needed for the city itself, since roads outside the center have potholes and police checkpoints are common. International Driving Permits are valid for up to 90 days.
Food in Maputo
Maputo's food mixes Mozambican cooking with Portuguese and Indian influences. Seafood stands out above everything else. Restaurants range from seafood places and piri-piri grills to cafes and international kitchens. Street snacks such as cashews, bean cakes and fruit are generally safer than meat from roadside stalls.
Prawns:
Fresh prawns are the best-known local meal. At the Mercado do Peixe you choose seafood and have it cooked at nearby restaurants, which is busy on Sunday afternoons.
Piri-piri chicken:
Chicken grilled with a hot chili sauce, which is a signature dish of Mozambican restaurants and is served with rice or chips.
Matapa:
A stew of cassava leaves cooked with peanuts and coconut, often with prawns and usually served with rice. It's a filling dish found in many local restaurants.
Market lunches:
Markets such as Mercado Janeta sell cheap plates of starch, meat and sauce, mostly at lunch. Pay cash and drink bottled water.
