Why travel to San Gil?
Adventure sports in a warm, hilly setting are the reason to come to San Gil. Rafting is the headline activity, with the Fonce River suitable for most experience levels and the Suárez River running through a canyon with Class IV and V rapids. Caving is the other big one. The Cueva de la Vaca near Curití involves swimming through a flooded tunnel and crawling through mud. The Cueva del Indio has bats and ends with a jump into a dark pool. People also come to paraglide over the Chicamocha Canyon and to rappel or canyon down waterfalls such as Juan Curí, which drops about 650 ft. Guides, helmets and equipment are included with the licensed operators in town. The calmer side is easy to find. El Gallineral is a riverside park in town with trees draped in Spanish moss and paths along the water. Natural pools like Pozo Azul are a short ride away and work well after an active morning. Barichara, a colonial village of whitewashed streets about 12.5 mi from San Gil, is a half-day trip. A hiking trail, the Camino Real, goes from there to the village of Guane. Two or three days covers the main activities and a week lets you add Barichara and the Chicamocha Canyon at a slower pace. San Gil is an activity base more than a sightseeing town. Nightlife is limited.
Knowledge before you go
- Book rafting and caving with a licensed operator.
- Rafting on the Fonce suits beginners while the Suárez has Class IV and V rapids for experienced rafters.
- Wear clothes you don't mind getting wet and muddy, since caving and canyoning leave everything soaked.
- The town is warm all year at about 3,600 ft, so evenings are usually comfortable and lightweight clothes work.
How to travel to San Gil
San Gil has no operating airport, so most visitors arrive by road from Bucaramanga or Bogotá. The nearest airport is Palonegro (BGA) at Bucaramanga, which has flights from Bogotá and other Colombian cities. From there the drive is around 60 mi and takes two to three hours through the Chicamocha Canyon. Buses run from the Bucaramanga bus terminal to San Gil through the day. Taxis and private transfers are also available. The journey from Bogotá takes about six to eight hours by road. Flying to Bucaramanga instead cuts the trip to a short flight and a road leg. Night driving on mountain roads is discouraged because of poor road standards. Many nationalities, including British citizens, can visit Colombia visa-free for up to 90 days. You need an onward or return ticket and a passport valid on entry. Six months of validity is recommended.
Access summary
- From José María Córdova (MDE): 1‑hour taxi or bus to San Gil.
- From Bogotá El Dorado (BOG): 3‑h flight to Medellín, then 1‑h drive; or from Armenia city: 45‑min bus.
- By regional bus from Bucaramanga: about 4 hours.
Where to stay in San Gil
Most visitors stay in the center of San Gil, where hotels, hostels and guesthouses are within walking distance of the main square and El Gallineral. The center is practical for tours that pick you up from your hotel and for restaurants and shops. Around town you will find cabins, eco-lodges and country houses in a quieter setting, often with pools and views of the hills. They suit longer stays and groups but need a taxi for dinner and activities. Apartments are another option. Barichara is a good alternative if you prefer a quieter colonial village to a busy adventure town. It's about 12.5 mi away and has small guesthouses and boutique hotels. San Gil gets busy on long weekends, around Easter and in December and January, so book ahead for those periods. Prices tend to be low to mid-range for Colombia.

How to get around San Gil
San Gil is small and the center is easy to cover on foot. El Gallineral and the main square are within a short walk of most hotels. Activities and swimming spots are outside town, so you will need a taxi, a shared ride or a tour that includes transport.
Walking:
The center is compact, with streets that slope gently up from the river. It's warm, so walk in the morning or evening and carry water.
Taxis:
Taxis are the simplest way to reach Pozo Azul, Curití and trailheads or operator offices outside the center. Agree the fare before you go or ask your hotel to book a trusted driver.
Buses and shared vans:
Local buses and shared vans go to Barichara and nearby villages from the terminal area. They run through the day but fill up on weekends and holidays.
Tours:
Most rafting, caving and paragliding trips are sold by operators in town and include pick-up from your hotel. This is the easiest way to reach sites outside San Gil.
Car:
A car isn't needed. Mountain roads have sharp curves and parking in the center is limited, so it only helps if you want to visit villages on your own schedule.
Food in San Gil
Santander cooking is hearty and meat-heavy, built around goat, beef, corn and cassava. It's served in family restaurants and street stalls in the center. You will find international food and cafes in town as well. Vegetarian options are limited, so ask before ordering.
Cabrito:
Roast or stewed goat is a signature dish of Santander. It's usually served with potatoes, rice or yuca and is common at weekend lunches.
Hormiga culona:
Fried leaf-cutter ants with big abdomens are a regional snack. They're salty and crunchy and mostly sold as a curiosity or a souvenir.
Mute santandereano:
A thick soup of corn, beans, potato and several types of meat. It's a filling meal and often eaten at lunch.
Carne oreada:
Beef that's salted and dried in the open air, then grilled. It's served with arepas, potatoes or yuca at local restaurants.
