Asia has seen real legal progress for LGBTQ+ rights in recent years, alongside a wide range of conditions depending on the country.
Taiwan became the first place in Asia to legalize same sex marriage in 2019, and Taipei has built a strong, visible community and one of the region's biggest Pride parades since. Thailand followed in 2025, becoming the first country in Southeast Asia to recognize same sex marriage, with Bangkok long known for a large and visible LGBTQ+ scene even before the law changed. Japan offers a different picture, with a long standing nightlife scene in Tokyo's Shinjuku Ni-chome district despite no national marriage recognition yet.
